Title: Thomas Stayt
Post by: mrharchitect on Thursday 22 March 12 15:50 GMT (UK)
My great, great grandfather, Thomas Stayt, was a butler working in several large houses in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. He was born (according to later Census returns) in Icombe, Gloucestershire in 1816.  He married Hannah Smith from Stow on the Wold around 1836.  I have been unable to find anything about either his or his wife's birth or their marriage.  (They appear with their children in the 1851 Census onwards)  I have even been in touch with Stayt family researchers who say they don't appear on their Stayt family tree.  Can anyone help please.

On 28th August 1794 at St Mary's Icomb a William Stayt of Lower Swell married a Mary Hambridge. Possible parents?

I have possibly found the marriage of one of Thomas Stayt's sons. At Claines Worcestershire on 17th April 1865 a Carlton Stayt, batchelor and farmer of Grimley married a Mary Ann Griffiths. Carlton's father was a Thomas Stayt who was a butler. Mary Ann's father was a shoemaker named Richard Griffiths

Have you tried variations of the spelling of the surname? A John STAIT married an Elizabeth Leachbury at Icomb on 30th October 1782. Plus the surname Staite appears in Worcestershire parish records

Thanks for the info but the William Stayt married to Mary Hambridge appears on the Stayt family tree which I mentioned.  Their son Thomas was born in 1798 and is linked to the tree owners family. The tree owner has done a lot of research and I have no reason to doubt his findings. I attach a copy for your interest. I have also checked other spellings of Stayt which do occur.  Thomas spent most of his life in Worcestershire and his sons and daughters were born there.  Do you have access to Gloucestershire records?  They do not seem to be on line.

The Gloucestershire Family History Society marriage index has Thomas STAYTE marrying Hannah SMITH at Cheltenham, St. Mary's 03 May 1836 by banns.

OK, I think I've found Thomas and Hannah on the 1851 census: both living in Ampney Crucis but Thomas with his employer and Hannah and children elsewhere in the village? Correct?

If so, then I think I've found them in 1841 too. You don't say you've got that one. If you want it, let me know.

To Victor Harvey

Thank you for the information.  I think 1813 may be too early.  All the census '51, '61, '71 and death state his birth was 1817.

The Glos FHS Baptisms Index has :

STAYT Thomas, son of Richard (labourer) and Anne baptised Longborough, St James, 2 Jun 1816.

Longborough to Icomb is only 6 miles. Seems plausible to me.

Your record of their marriage at St Marys Cheltenham in 1836 would fit in with the timescale (their first child Henry was born in 1837) although I am surprised they were not married in Hannah's birth town of Stow on the Wold.  Perhaps she was in service in Cheltenham?  Your record of them living in Ampney Crucis in 1851 is correct.  I would like to see the 1841 record you mention as I have not found it myself.

Yes, my guess would be that one or other or both of them were working in Cheltenham in 1836.

That said, if the 1841 census entry I've found is correct, and I think it must be, then Thomas is shown on that census as a "baker". Was that an earlier occupation or is it an error, I wonder?

The entry is reference HO 107 / 889 / 12 for the parish of Coggs, near Witney, which was the place of birth given for the two eldest children in 1851. That, plus the unusual name Charlton (1851)/Carlton (1841) makes me pretty confident this is correct.

Newland:

Thomas Stayt 25 Baker Not born in Oxon
Hannah 25 Born in Oxon
Henry 4 Born in Oxon
Carlton 1 Born in Oxon

If you have a subscription to Ancestry, they've got it mistranscribed under HAYT.
FindMyPast have it under STAYT.

Hope you can find it.

Yes the 1841 record is correct.  Thanks for that.  The misreading of Stayt as Hayt in Ancestry.co.uk had me fooled.

To Forefathers.

Thank you for the birth reference to Thomas Stayt at Longborough in 1816.  I have done further  research and find that Thomas put Stanton as his birth place in the 1851 Census.  Stanton is quite close to Longborough and seems more feasible.  I have found a Richard Stait (agricultural labourer) and Anne (Jackson) married in 1814 in Temple Guiting, also quite close to Stanton / Longborough, although Richard Stait seems to have spent most of his life (1785 to 1858) in Temple Guiting.  Although spelt differently do you think this is the Richard and Anne Stayt you have seen in the Longbough entry?

Hmmm... Sorry, but I'm not convinced the Thomas Stayt baptised in Longborough is the right one now. If you do a search on Ancestry in the census for Thomas Stayte born Longborough 1816 +/- 5 I think you'll find him still in Longborough, occupation tailor, married to a Frances, living with his mother Ann... That's surely the Longborough baptism?

So, I'll have another look for your Thomas.

He's proving pretty elusive. The vast number of possible variants of this surname doesn't help (I've seen STAYT, STAYTE, STAYTT, STAIT, STAITE, STATE, also probably STAIGHT, STEIGHT...).

One thing that is quite possibly relevant here is that Icomb was in Worcester Diocese until 1912 and does not appear to be covered by the Glos FHS baptisms index I'm using.

The only STA*T* I can find baptised in Stanton is an Edita, illegitimate daughter of Phoebe, 30 May 1819, Stanton St. Michael.

If I get a chance I'll try to look at the Icomb registers next time I'm at Gloucester Archives.

I am still chasing Thomas Stayt.  I would like to know the exact location of Park Cottage where he and his family lived between about 1860 and 1900.  It is (was) backing onto the Thorngrove estate near Grimley Worcestershire where he worked as a butler for a succession of owners.  It was quite a big cottage with 6 bedrooms and about 2 acres of land. It does not show on Google maps but perhaps it is on a Victorian map of the time.
