Flys were one horse two wheeled carriages for hire, he would have employed the drivers and probably owned a fleet of these

As well as Fly Proprietors there were also Cab Proprietors, Brake Proprietors, Coach Proprietors, and Wagonette Proprietors for the different kinds of vehicle.
