hey folks please can anyone help?
ive been researching my steele family tree... and I think jeremiah steel married to mary hudson, jeremiah was born 1741 stafford
his fathers name is listed as john hough, why would his fathers surname be different?
also jeremiahs children all took on the steel surname
thankyou

One possible explanation would be that Jeremiah was illegitimate, but that his father's name was known, ie his parents were a Miss Steel and John Hough.
Another possibility is that John was Jeremiah's stepfather - I have seen them named on marriage records occasionally.
Unfortunately without the baptism record these are only guesses!

It sounds to me as though he was illegitimate, was this in the parish register - was it his christening or marriage :-\

I found a record on FamilySearch - an intended marriage in Cheshire Marriage Bonds and Allegations which lists John Hough as father.

Well done ;D
Sounds to me as though he was probably illegitimate then, I wonder if John Hough was wealthy.

hey folks :)
thanks for all your help :)
so just to check, john hough (possibly) is jeremiah steel's biological father.. but illegitimate.. and so jeremiah would take on his mothers surname? steel?
thankyou

Yes, that's probably the most likely explanation.
