Charles Cox (born c1830 Somerset,England) married Mary Tottle (born c 1831 Somerset England) in 1852 in Somerset, England. They arrived in Moreton Bay in February 1858 on the ship Irene along with their daughter Emily (born 1857 Somerset, England). The Immigrant Board Examination record dated a few days after their arrival stated Charles' parents were named Charles and Ann and that he had a cousin living in New South Wales but no further details of that cousin were given.
Charles and Emily settled in the Freestone/Warwick area and had further children (Thomas born 1859, Ann born 1861 and George born 1865). Charles Cox died in May 1866 when he fell off his horse in Warwick. Charles and Mary are the GG grandparents of a friend of mine who I'm helping research the Cox family. There is a family story that Charles is related to William Cox the land surveyor who built the first road over the Blue Mountains.
I'm interested in hearing from anyone who may know if Charles and William Cox are related or may have further information regarding Charles & Emily's life in the Warwick area and any information regarding Charles' parents. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am confused! Is it Charles and Mary or Charles and Emily?
Charles Cox and Mary Tottle appear to have had 4 children in Queensland: -
Tom b 07/02/1859 ref B903
Ann b 10/04/1861 ref C890
Albert b 31/05/1863 ref 1222
George b 02/07/1865 ref 1875
The 'B' in the reference number for Tom indicates he was born in Brisbane and the rest born in Country Queensland. Most likely Warwick as you have indicated.
Queensland was still officially New South Wales in 1858, not gaining it's independance until Dec 1859, so it may be that Charles and Mary were meeting up with their cousin in the Warwick area of "New South Wales"

Thanks for all the information. Sorry for the confusion but it is Charles Cox and Mary Tottle (not Emily). My friend Anne is the great grandaughter of Charles and Mary's son Thomas.
I do have the birth, marriage and death dates for Charles and Mary's children. We do have the newspaper report from Trove on Charles' death in 1866. The inquest report into his death is still in existence and Anne has applied for a copy of that from the Qld State Archives. It will be interesting to see just how much information surrounding Charles' death it contains.
We didn't have the monumental inscriptions though so thanks for that. Are there records for Warwick cemetery available to view online?

Perhaps this thread needs to be updated, re the inquest, and then merged with the following thread?

Did you want earlier info re Charles and Emily? These records (which you may already have) seem to fit.
FreeReg has this marriage:
St Michael's church, Burrowbridge, Somerset
12 Apr 1852
Charles COX, Bachelor, Labourer, Abode: Burrowbridge
Mary TOTTLE, Spinster, no occupation given, Abode: Burrowbridge
Bride's father: Emmanuel TOTTLE, Mason
Witness One: William TOTTLE
Witness Two: Mary Jane TOTTLE
Notes: He illegitimate
The Note explains why there is no father given on other certificates. No ages are shown for either.
Possibly Mary's baptism (FreeReg)
Church of St Gregory, Stoke St Gregory, Somerset
Baptised: 02 Oct 1831
Forename Mary
Father's Forename Emanuel
Mother's Forename Priscilla
Father's Surname TOTTLE
Abode: Stoke St Gregory
Father's Occupation Mason
Baptism for Charles (FreeReg)
Holy Trinity Church, Long Sutton, Somerset
Baptised: 18 Jul 1830
Forename Charles
Mother: Ann COX
Father's (sic) Occupation Single woman
Ann COX (spinster) married William ASHTON (bachelor, carpenter), 30 May 1844 at Burrowbridge
Charles in 1851: at Riverside, Stoke St Gregory.
William Ashton 59, b Broadway, Somerset, carpenter
Ann Ashton 48, wife, b Long Sutton
Charles Cox 22, son-in-law, ag lab, b Long Sutton
(My note - Charles is listed as unmarried so son-in-law would mean that he is William's stepson)
Mary in 1841 - at Hammer?? Wall??, Stoke St Gregory. Looks as though her mother has remarried.
James Palmer 25, waterman
Priscillia Palmer 25
Mary Tottle 9
Elizabeth Tottle 6
William Palmer 2
In 1851 Mary TOTTLE is a lodger, with Mary Jenkins, 72, and still in Stoke St Gregory now with the address "Riverside, Burrowbridge, Stoke St Gregory". Occupation: 'pipe maker' - there are others with the same occupation in this area.
The street/road called "Riverside" is easily seen on Googlemap.
