Post by: sketchgnarl on Tuesday 20 March 12 15:34 GMT (UK)
hi
looking for information about Joseph Vaughan Vickers born in Bronington Flintshire in 1885.
died 8th feb 1961 in a motorcycle accident in hoole.

has a son buried in blacon cemetary William Ewart Vickers.

particularly interested in the war service of my relatives. Joseph was in the royal artillery in ww1 and his son was in the pioneer corps in ww2.

any help gratefully received.

Per freebmd

Births September qtr 1885
Joseph Vaughan Vickers   Ellesmere  6a 715

Marriages September qtr 1910

Vickers  Joseph V     Wrexham  11b 474
Lily Williams

His WW1 service record has not survived - more than 60% of such records were burnt in the WW2 blitz

I can't see an entry for him on the WW1 Medal Roll Index - there are a lot of Joseph Vickers but none with a middle name/initial of Vaughan

Somebody has reported a transcription error to this 1891 entry from  Joseph T Jones to Joseph V Vickers as per the original image

John Jones 33 b Flint Wortlenbury??
Jemima   25 b Flint Halphton?
Joseph V Vickers   6 b Bronington  son
Philip H  4 b Whitchurch Shropshire
Mary E  2 b Whitchurch
RG12 Piece 2125 Folio 96 Page 10

It would suggest that either Jemima was previously married or Joseph was her illegitimate son - difficult to say as she married as Edwards and the marriage was before Joseph's birth??

Marriages March qtr 1885
Jemima Edwards   Wrexham  11b 350
John Jones   Wrexham  11b 350

Hi,

I see William Ewart died in WW2 - as you have his name and service number you should be able to apply for copies of any records that still survive from the MOD - but there is a charge of course.

1871 for Flintshire

William Vickers 30 b Manchester Lancs
Elizabeth   26 b Bronington
Jemima  4 b Halghton
Elizabeth 1   ditto
John Wolfe 52 father in law b Hanmer - Flint
Edith Pritchard 3 Months nurse child b Halghton

William and Elizabeth (nee Wolfe) were married in 1864 in Ellesmere

I can't reconcile the Jemima Edwards with this Jemima

There is an entry on the WWI Medal Roll for a 'Jos V Vickers' who was a Gunner in the RFA.
Regiment or Corps: Royal Field Artillery, Royal Field Artillery
Regimental Number: 1258, 735582
He served in France in Nov 1915 so was entitled to all 3 ww1 medals.

Sounds like your relative to me.

hi  shep

that is indeed my g/g`s medal card and i`ve just found out that it was likely
he served with one of the Cheshire-based brigades of the Royal Field Artillery.
most likely being.
342 (CCCXLII) Brigade RFA (previously the 2nd/1st Cheshire Brigade). France and Palestine.
i should be able to obtain a search now through the cheshire regiment archive.

thanks to all for your input.

re: william vickers - i believe he died in a farming accident, aged 57,  falling off a thrashing machine and having concussion, and never regained consciousness.
