Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had access to the Longton parish records and if you could tell me the details, particularly the fathers occupation.
I'm interested in the baptism of William Cooper, son of William and Martha, baptised 28 Nov 1813. And if it's easy to search, are there any other baptisms of children to this couple? I'm slowly locating the baptisms of W&M's children - in Staffordshire and Derbyshire - but am having trouble in locating the last, Sarah born between 1813 and 1816 according to census records.
Many thanks
Paula

I, too, am looking for a baptism of a John Skerrett(several variations of this surname, who according to census records was born approx 1816 at Longton. On his death cert, which was in Scotland, he states his parents as Joseph Skerret, potter, and Essex Thomson. Rather an unusual christian name, but it was handed down throughout the family.
I am, of the opinion, that maybe John was illegitimate. Are you able to help. Many thanks.

Hi I have had a look at Longton St Johns the only Longton church with relevant dates, and sadly can't find rhe Joseph you are looking for.
However ther are these two entries ( probably not relevant but ...
Prudence to Benjamin & Mary Skerritte Lane end Cordwainer. may 27th 1813
Joseph to same parents Lane end Cordwainer.12Mar 1819
My search was between 1813 - 1820
Lane end and Longton were 2 townships classed as 1 populace.
There are alot of smaller parishes around there infact alot of parishes. If you have any other clues I will check them out for you.

Many thanks for getting back to me, I do appreciate it. I think Burslem was mentioned but can't remember why. I am of the opinion that John Skerret was illegitimate, hence no baptism probably.
But where on earth did Essex Thomson spring from? It is an unusual christian name for a female, although saying that, we have a female teacher at a local school with that christian name.
As I said the christian name came down the family, so she was obviously John's mother.
Perhaps another dead end. But thanks.

Hey, can I join in here? The John Skerrett you are looking for was my great great great grandfather. I have all the info on his family, but only the names of his parents (Joseph & Essex). PM me for more (*)

Message for Derek Simpson re Skerret family. I, myself, are not connected to the Skerret family, but I was helping a friend who was assisting Martin, whom I believe you may have been in contact with before. He is happy to resume correspondence with you and we believe you still have his e.mail address.
