Title: Malarkey name in Fermanagh?
Post by: joejack101 on Wednesday 14 March 12 16:09 GMT (UK)

Hi - I wonder if anyone can help me. My Mother's maiden name was MALARKEY and on my great great great grandfather's 1851 census return in Glasgow, his birthplace is given as Co. Fermanagh. It looks as though the Malarkey's I am interested in moved to Glasgow between 1847 and 1848.
Can anyone tell me if this is a common surname in Fermanagh?

Many thanks, Gerry.

Hi Jerry,
The name Malarkey is comparitively rare in Fermanagh around the time you are interested in. The Tithe Rolls of 1834 list three:
Owen in the townland of Drumbarry, parish of Galloon
Pat in the townland of Cessiagh (Culliagh), Parish of Cleenish
Thomas in the the townland of Caranaculla (Carrowmaculla), Parish of Galloon.
In 1848 there was also a widow Malarkey in Enniskillen who was granted outdoor relief during the Great Famine. In the Griffith Valuation of 1862 the name appears to be recorded as McLarkin.

Regards
