I too have a query regarding a suicide that took place at Johnston's Land Cambusnethan 17 July 1885 of James Inglis (Master Shoemaker). He was aged 66.
I wonder if it would have been reported in the Glasgow papers or if I'd need to access the 'Wishaw Press' via Motherwell Heritage Centre. Would appreciate some insight.
With thanks, Sage.

Sorry there doesn't appear to be anything listed in the Gales collection of 19th century newspapers (including the Glasgow Herald)
Checking the Wishaw Press may yield better results

How about trying the National Archives Sage. http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/

Sage, from here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,510660.msg3669210.html#msg3669210 - see the link for the Glasgow Herald which you can search on line directly. The Evening Times is not until the 20thC.

Thanks everyone...with a bit of luck I'll get a chance to spend a day at Motherwell Heritage Centre in June. I'll put this look-up on my list of priorities!
Thanks again,
Sage.

Sage, the Hamilton Library has the "Hamilton Advertiser" if Motherwell is unsuccessful.

There is a report in The Scotsman on 16th July 1885 page 4.

Thank you so much
Can't get the information - a job for another day - but thank you for taking the time to reply.

Hi Murphydog
Welcome to RootsChat :)
I am sure Sage will have made headway on the story since last year, especially with the further info provided by Lud. Sage will get a notification of your post and will post on here. Sage will very likely expand further on the background on this sad story...maybe by PM/personal message if need be.

Hi Monica
Thank you so much! Wish I'd known about this website a year ago. I have been researching my family for about a year (not long) and only came across this website today. Thank you - it is so good to know that there are people out there who are interested and will respond.
With every good wish

Hi Anne...I'm more than happy to help you out with this one but I'm in Oz and it's morning here and I have to go to work. The article that Lud sent me explained all. Be in touch this evening.
Sage. :)

Knew you would be there Sage ;) Have the Scotsman article now that Cookies4 mentioned. Have you got this? Have sent Anne a PM about this too.
