Post by: Blondelavelle on Wednesday 14 March 12 01:02 GMT (UK)
Guys/ girls I'm from Lancashire, England. My father was born in blacksod co Mayo. His dad my grandad and his dad my great grandad were born on inishkea Ireland. Does anyone know where they would be registered as being born would it be the island or belmullet? I know my grandad was born in 1908

Belmullet would have been the registration district for Blacksod village (Fallmore townland), Inishkea North and South

Lavelle birth registrations, Belmullet district 1907-1909 (https://www.familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3ALavelle~%20%2Bbirth_place%3ABelmullet%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1907-1909~&collection_id=1408347)

Blondie,

You should try and get your hands on a copy of Mayo's Lost Islands - The Inishkeas by Brian Dornan. It has extensive information about families on the islands in the 1800s. Plenty of mentions of Lavelles in it! It's a pretty interesting read anyway but for anyone who has ancestors from the Inishkeas it should be compulsory reading.

Also back in 1895 a Dr. Browne did an ethnographic study of the Mullet and the Inishkeas. It's a study of the people basically. If you want send me a message and I'll send it onto you. You never know, one of the men detailed in it might be an ancestor.

Happy Paddys Day!

Hi yes I have the book the lost islands it's great! I need to see if I can online order my fathers and granddads certificates as I'm English  and not based in Ireland. If anyone has a web address of where I can order birth certificates and approx price i would appreciate a reply. I'm not sure of my great granddads birth but hopefully my granddads certain will help me.

That study done by the doctor sounds interesting I would be interested in it!

to order certs you first need to work out possible references from the BMD Index on FamilySearch. Once you have these you can order research certs by post from the GRO - these cost €4 once you include the correct references.

Hi 'Blondlevelle'

Do you want to give us your Grandad's name so we can check to see if there is a match on the register ??

I checked and the book is out of print unfortunately. You could try contacting the publisher:
http://www.fourcourtspress.ie/product.php?intProductID=388
If you're in Ireland, I know the book is available in some libraries, so you might want to check that out first.

This would appear to be your grandfather in 1911

 john lavelle 1911 census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Binghamstown__South/Innishkea_North/709931/)

His father was Anthony Lavelle

This appears to be him in 1901

 anthony lavelle 1901 census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Binghamstown_South/Iniskea_North/1580837/)

I am trying to work out the parents of Anthony - the problem is that a few were born at the same time to a Patrick, but all with different mother's names

 possible anthony lavelle births (https://familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Aanthony~%20%2Bsurname%3Alavelle~%20%2Bbirth_place%3Amayo~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1870-1875~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Apatrick~)

Ok So,

Had a good luck and Anthony's parents were Patrick Lavelle and Sarah (Sally) McNamara

Below are some of the children born to this couple

patrick and sarah lavelle children (https://familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Alavelle~%20%2Bbirth_place%3Amayo~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1865-1885~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Apatrick~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3Asally~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Amcnamara~)

The interesting one is that you will see a marriage for their son Brian Lavelle in Massachusettes.
