Post by: Debbie658 on Tuesday 13 March 12 10:23 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone,

Would someone be able to look up Assisted Immigrants from England to Victoria Passenger list for June 1855.  The ship was the 'Epaminondas' which departed from Plymouth and arrived in Geelong 1 June 1855.  Looking for a Ann Connors Age 22 Born abt 1833 Clare, Ireland.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated :)

Online Index at PROV - and your Ann is listed on the EPAMINONDAS however you will need someone to look at the fiche for any further information.

Another resource states the ship arrived at Geelong on 1 Jun 1855 and Ann's nationality listed as Irish and Scotch.

Debbie,
I'll look at the manifest for this ship... that's if no one has already done it for you.

Debbie,

Information from the manifest for the Epaminondas -

Ann CONNORS - age 22 - domestic servant - rel - Roman Catholic -
read & write - native country - Tipperary.
Employed by - ? McNaughton - Barrabool Hills
wages - £20 - term 3 months

Catherine CONNORS - age 25 - domestic servant  - rel - roman catholic -
rear & write - native country - Tipperary.
Employed  by - Luke Ransom - Indented Head
wages - £22 - term 6 months.

It's possible Ann & Catherine Connors were sister?.

Probably not the Ann Connors you were searching for.

Hi

Just in case the places are unfamilier Indented Head is to the east of Geelong on the Bellarine Peninsular and the Barrabool Hills is an area just west of Geelong, look on a map for Ceres.

I know this is an old thread but I believe a relative of mine was also aboard this same ship - Elizabeth Grinter, she would have been approx 6 years old so likely with her parents Thomas and Mary, and possibly some siblings.
Would any one please be able to look up to confirm this?

I was wondering about the brother in Melbourne and having a quick look about.

It looks as if there were at least three GRINTER men in Victoria about that time and I am wondering whether two brothers, Charles and Thomas, married two sisters Sarah JEANES (with Charles)   and Mary JEANES, (with your man).

The other, man James GRINTER was with Ann PALMER.

What do you think?

Yes, that's right.
The Grinter's were breeders - some had 15 children!
Elizabeth (above) also married her cousin Charles - just to make things more interesting/difficult!
Her brother Thomas who was an infant on board died 15 days after their arrival. Not a very nice welcome to Australia.

And James Grinter was married to Ann Palmer, and his brother Charles Grinter married Leah Palmer...
