I wonder if anyone could possibly look up for me on the 1911 Census, Arthur Purchase, born 1870 in the Alton area, married to a Mary Knight in 1895. Last known address at Winterborne Steepleton in Dorset. I am looking to find where he went to after that as rumour has it that the family went Portsmouth way. They had a daughter called Adelaide or Adeline.

I am sorry but 1911 requests are not allowed.

OK thank you anyway.

Try Farleigh Wallop!
Basingstoke area.

Thanks for that KGarrad. I will do that.

According to FreeBMD, Adelaide Mary Purchase was born in the Romsey district in March quarter 1897. She appears to have possibly married in June quarter 1919 in the Westbourne district.
There were no matches for Adeline Purchase.
GenesReunited 1911 census index (which is free) shows Adelaide Mary Purchase, born c1897 in Halterworth Romsey, to be in the Basingstoke district. It also shows that Arthur was said to have been born in Herriard and Mary in Medstead.

Thank you so much Jane. I know other members of the family did live in Romsey for a while, and Arthur seems to have moved around a bit. I have him down for living in Dorset also, but I know there is a large accumulation of Purchases in that area that are not related to my lot, or at least I have not made a connection yet, so I wonder if I have got it right. Have had a long break from the family tree so I have to now get my thoughts back on track. Many thanks again.

I don't know if you can help on this little family mystery Jane, Arthur had a brother Frank, born Lasham in 1875 to Eli & Betsey Purchase, and after he left home to work in Islington as a railway porter was never heard of again. Story goes that he was killed in an accident but this has never been proved. I have checked the census for 1901 and it looks like he was in lodgings with an Edmund Watkins and family. After that I can't find him anywhere. Where do I go next ?!!

FreeBMD shows a possible death:
March qtr 1929
Chertsey district vol 2a, page 172
Purchase, Frank age 58
But more likely:
1910, there is a passenger, Frank Purchase, travelling to New York?
-
O thank you, how can I go about finding if the one travelling to New York is the one. Do you know the name of the ship ? If I get a death certificate for the other one will it tell me where he was from.

FindMyPast have the details - you could purchase credits with them?
(My subscription has expired!)
Also on GenesReunited I believe!

Many thanks. Sylvia

www.ellisisland.org should have a passenger list to New York in 1910. The site is free with registration.
However, the only Frank Purchase that I see that travelling in 1910 was born about 1903.

Thanks Shelley, will take a look at that, but it rather looks like I am back to square one. Would love to know what happened to him. He was my grandfathers brother, and no-one ever talked about him when I was young. There was always a mystery about him.
