Hi, Duagh is right for me but out by 60 yrs or so. Knockalougha/Trieneragh is the locality where Johanna Quill of Knockavalla who married James Griffin of Mountcastle on 8 Feb 1890 lived after their marriage. My grandfather John Griffin was born on 14 nov there.
Duagh is the parish church for the area.
It's quite possible that your Quill is an ancestor of Johanna's.

Do you have any further information on Ellen Quill and John Guerin?
Through RIC records I've narrowed down my John Guerin to somewhere probably within 10 miles of the JP Christopher Julian at Tullamore House.
I know from elsewhere that his parents are John and Ellen, and have come across a baptism for John in Duagh 4 April 1825, which matches my John. he should have a brother thomas born around 1833, but I cannot find him there.
Can you help me fill in the gaps?

Hi Sunnylew, you mention RIC records and Christopher Julian of Tullamore House - that is at the opposite side of Listowel to Duagh, and in a different Parish. Tullamore is between Ballylongford and Listowel whereas Duagh is between Listowel and Abbeyfeale. Did Christopher Julian recommend your John Guerin for the RIC? He most likely lived in the vicinity of Tullamore if that is the case rather than in Duagh.

Hi Breenbryne,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, Christopher Julian recommended John for the RIC.
Although Duagh is the other side of Listowel, it's only 10 miles away, and I think perhaps they may have met in Listowel in some way or another.
The family seemed to get around a bit:
The marriage of John Guerin and Ellen Quill was in Lixnaw, about 15 or so miles from Duagh, and if Ellen is the daughter of the John Quill of Kilshenane in the 1825 Applotment books, she grew up ten or so miles away.
The family also seem to have had connections up a little north, nearer to Tullamore House in Moyvane - about 6 and a half miles from Tullamore and over 8 miles from Duagh.
A John and Ellen are sponsors at a baptism there in 1837 and they may be the same couple.
I can't conclusively tie my John with the John born there in 1825, but he seems the most reasonable fit so far - same parent's first names, right time of birth, right county, right father's occupation and within 10 miles of the JP who recommended him for the RIC.
I hope that perhaps the Quill family might give me some clue that can clinch the connection for me.
Do you know whether the Quills were based anywhere else or moved from the area later?
My Guerins disappear between the Tithe Applotments and Griffiths, and I wonder whether they emigrated, or perhaps John was simply no longer a tenant farmer and laboured for someone else.

Some of the Quills were in Knocknagoshel parish associated with Curtins Tooreenard/ -a stones throw from Duagh parish- in the 1800's. The origins of Quill is from Wood and there was a big write up about them in a specialist publication I saw in Castleisland Library last year July/August.
You could phone or email them. Some of them were well connected. :)

The Woods' origins were associated with Limerick whence to N. Kerry. 10 statute miles in those times would be approximately 200 metres today. 40 or 50 miles was a journey to a local County town including driving cattle to the fair or attending a sports meeting. The social division between the estates and Houses of Limerick and the mountains of Kerry can also be explained. :)

I've since found that Christopher Julian of Tullamore House held his lands from Sir John Benn-Walsh, as did the Guerins and Ellen (Quill) in Dirrindaff in Duagh. This may be the connection.
