Title: Where Is "On The Canal, Salisbury"?
Post by: Les de B on Saturday 10 March 12 04:02 GMT (UK)
Just reading an 1813 notice for my ancestor Charles BELIN;

"Salisbury - To be Sold by Auction, on the Premises, by C.Norton, on Monday the 27th of September instant, - Part of the Household Goods, Paintings, Drawings, Prints, &c. of Mr.Belin, on the Canal..........(list of items follows)"

I've tried to find "The Canal" as an address in Salisbury, but the best I can do is Canal Street. Would anybody know if "On The Canal" is an actual address so I can try and find to look at on Google Street View?

Charles BELIN was married to Mary CORFE, daughter of the choirmaster/organist of Salisbury Cathedral, and I have their details.

Les, Is the Canal St you found in what we'd now call the CBD of Salisbury?

Is so,it might be that it was  known as "on the Canal"?

Why don't you see if he is in Trade Directories and what the address is given there?  That might sort it out for you. :)

Well, that link's info certainly answers the question.  And a pic as a bonus.

There was also a canal link from just to the west of Salisbury to eventually reach Southampton.   It was used from 1803 just until 1808.

The only actual canal (for boats!) I can find was the Salisbury and Southampton Canal, but that only got as far as Alderbury, some 4 miles south east of Salisbury.

Thanks to all for your replies.

The link that was submited probably sums up the reason behind the Canal's name.

I tried the Trade Directories as suggested, but the earliest Directory  for Salisbury was 1822 some 9yrs after the 1813 advertisement, and to my knowledge(?) he no longer lived there.

However, I did note there were other residents there in 1822, who's address was simply listed as "Canal", so I presume that's why my ancestor's address in 1813 was described as "on the Canal".

Hi Les

New Canal is the name of one of the main shopping streets in Salisbury now but back then it was just 'Canal' or 'The Canal'.  I believe the reason was, as the link suggests, that Salisbury was famous for its watercourses or ditches then and one of the larger ones ran along this street.  I believe it was a mixture of commercial and residential premises then.  Now it's all shops (Marks & Spencer etc) as you can probably see from the photo on the link page.

Thanks Fiona for that little bit of extra information. And welcome to RootsChat - such a great site for family researchers - both old and new ;)

Hello Les,

Wiltshire Treasures website has a picture of New Canal in 1886 - I know it's a long time after Charles Belin left, but it gives you an idea of how its changed.

I tried to do a direct link to the photo, but couldn't, so if you click on the "Start Here" button, then type in Pig Market New Canal in the Search Box, it should take you direct to the image (otherwise it means going through 150+ photos, most of which are from the 1970's.

Thanks Yorkslass - looks fairly wide in that photo. Also had a look at other photos on the site as well.
