My 2x great grandmother, Lily Breckon, died on 5 Apr 1899 in the Leeds Union Infirmary. She was buried in the Beckett Street Cemetery on 8 Apr 1899. I ordered a copy of her death certificate and it states that she was the widow of Albert Breckon and lived on 2 High Street. Albert was her husband but I haven't been able to find either him or Lily on the 1891 census or a death record for Albert. It seems they both vanish in 1891, but Lily gives birth to a daughter in Leeds in 1892 and Albert is the father. I have searched for weeks to find either Lily or Albert in 1891 but no luck.
The West Yorkshire Archive Service did a look up for me of her burial record. The address given on the burial record is the Leeds Workhouse. So my question is why was an address given of 2 High Street on her death certificate and an address of the workhouse on her burial record? I believe the Workhouse was located on Beckett Street and not High Street. Am I missing something here?
Any help would be more than appreciated...

Hmm, this is tricky.
I can see Albert in 1871 with his mother and brother Ernest, all with his Wood grandparents. In 1881 his mother seems to have remarried, to William Greig, and he is with them at 34 Craven Street Leeds, aged 12, recorded as stepson.
Can't see him or Lily in 1891, but using an address search for High Street Leeds even numbers appear to start at 4. It looks to me as if the enumerator has missed number 2 if it ever existed!
What's the address on the daughters birth certificate?
Anne

Not sure of the situation in Leeds, but very often the Infirmary was part of, or attached to, the Workhouse. It certainly was in Halifax at about this time.

you have the right marriage there millie but it is a bad transcription. it says albert wood brecken if you have a good look at it.

Thank you all so very much for responding to my post. Yes, that is the correct marriage.
Lily and Albert had 2 daughters one being my 2x great grandmother, Kate born in 1889. They had another daughter Florence in 1892. Kate was raised by another family and I believe she was boarded out and eventually "adopted" by the family she lived with. I had suspicion that Lily was in the workhouse but couldn't find anything to prove it until I got the information from her burial record which gave an address of The Workhouse.
When Kate was born the address given on her birth certificate was 56 Jermyn Road which was Lily's mother's address. On the 1891 census there is no sign of Lily living with her mother at that address. I realize it was 2 years after Kate's birth. On Florence's birth certificate in 1892 the same address was given, but it seems she was baptized in the workhouse.
When Lily died in 1899 it states that she was the widow of Albert Breckin-cloth finisher. An address of 2 High Street is given on her death certificate but the burial certificate gives the address of the workhouse. If I could find either one of them in 1891 it would certainly help, but I can't find them.
I believe that Florence was probably boarded out as well and have ordered research for both girls at the West Yorkshire Archives to find out. There is no death record that I can find for Albert between Florence's birth (if he really is the father as the certificate states) and 1899 the year of Lily's death as she is listed as his widow.
Albert is a mystery! There is an Alfred W Brackin - listed in 1891 who is a cloth finisher and I suspect this may be him. But where Lily is I don't think I will ever know.
Once again, thank you for all of the responses!

Bit of a sad story then. I saw the one for Alfred W as well hmmm.
I can see Kate in 1891 lodger aged 1 with a family called Blackburn. 72 Westfield Rd Leeds it looks like.
Same address in 1901 and she is adopted daughter.
Still with them in 1911 boarder address 2 Osbourne View Leeds but you may already have this.
So Albert dies between 1892 and 1899.
-
He should have died in between those years, but I don't know if he really did. Maybe Lily told them she was a widow when he actually left her? I thought that maybe he emigrated but can't find him anywhere else either.
-
I can't see a death for him.
Yes that is a possibility he had left her and she said she was a widow. It's a puzzle where they all were. The only one we have in 1891 for sure is Kate and she isn't with her mother or father yet they had another daughter after that. Is a bit odd.

No sign of anything else yet but will keep looking.

If it's any consolation to Tamara I think we're all looking - but like you, I can't find anything either ?

Probably a coincidence but there is a Blackburn family next to the Carrolls (Lilly and her mother) on the 1881 census.
Is Lillys mother Margaret around in 1891? I can't see her.
-
I can't thank each one of you enough for your assistance with this!
Lily's mother (Margaret) married a man by the name of Alfred Lee in 1891.
I know that Lily was raised by Thomas Blackburn and his family from the time she was about a year old right up until the time she married my 2x great grandfather. I have all the Blackburn info traced. I have traced Lily's family as well as Albert's. Although there are a few unanswered questions there as well, it's nothing that would lead me to them in 1891. I am hoping there is something in the boarding out records that will be helpful but it's going to take about 6 weeks before I receive anything if there is anything to receive!
Albert is my biggest brickwall and maybe someday I will find him or maybe I won't!
Thank you again,
Tamara

Ah right I see.
Only thing I can think is workhouse records/census for 1891, maybe Lily was lurking in there :(
I found someone the other day in an asylum and that was purely by his initials. All the occupants were listed as AH or PB etc but birthplace and age matched.
Come back when you get the records and update the story :)
-
i see lillys mother married alfred lucas in 1899. was there any connection between him and the ann lucas who was a witness on the marriage cert of alberts parents charles and mary?
looking at the baptism record for florence it's noticable that there is mainly only the mothers name recorded. do you think albert had allready gone by then and florence would have been given up for adoption straight away.

I've found out a couple of names for people who were in Leeds Workhouse in 1891 so am going to have a look for them and go through the names just in case. No stone unturned as it were 8)
-
if you put "leeds workhouse" or "huslet workhouse" etc in the keywords box on search that will bring the lists up for them
-
Following the link above 'leedsworkhouse', you will find inmates and staff for 1861 and 1881.
No 1891 listing, unless I have missed something.

if you go to the 1891 census and search that census only you will get it. same with all of them, search seperately.

I have to thank all of you again for your help in my search. I will follow the advice suggested and continue on with my search. If I do ever find her, this wonderful group will be the first to know!!
Kind regards,
Tamara
