Title: Ellen Tipping and Daniel McNally
Post by: saupere on Friday 09 March 12 16:34 GMT (UK)
Ellen Tipping and Daniel McNally were my Great Grandparents on my mother's father's side.    They were married in St Margaret's Catholic Church in Airdrie, Scotland in 1869 before coming to America in the late 1870's or very early 1880's.   I have also seen Ellen's name as Tippen.   Once in America they lived in Dunbar, Pennsylvania where they died days apart in 1887 or 1888 in what was known as the Russian Flu Epidemic.    They left 3 daughters all born in Scotland, named Katherine, Grace and Ellen (or Nellie) and 2 sons both born in the USA named Francis (my grandfather) and Joseph.   While in Scotland I believe they lived in a place called Monkland or New Monkland.    Their families came to Scotland from Ireland during the Potato Famine of the 1840's.    Ellen Tipping was born in Scotland of Irish parents in the 1840's.   Daniel McNally was born in the 1840's in Ireland.   I have also seen Daniel's name spelled as McAnalley.  Ellen Tipping had a brother named John who arrived in Pennsylvania years before Daniel and Ellen and it was he who adopted and raised 3 or 4 of the younger orphans when his sister died.    He ran a general store in Everson, Pennsylvania.   I am looking to connect with any distant relatives who might have record of Daniel or Ellen.  I do not have pictures of Daniel or Ellen but I do have pictures of the 5 children and their uncle John, Ellen's brother that I will try to attach

Thank you EV, I was aware of 1 or 2 sons that died as infants either in Scotland or on the trip over.  I did not know his name (Hugh).      What exactly is Penicuik?   A borough or township?

Sancti, that second address you post from 1851......is it the McNally family (Daniel's parents) or the Tipping family ?    And would you happen to know if any of these buildings still stand.    Someday I'd like to travel to Ireland & Scotland and I'd like to see this old neighborhood.

Are either of you related to these folks?

Thanks very much for your help.

Saupere, I'm not related

The 1851 census is for the Tipping family

Rawyards is now an area of modern day Airdrie (New Monkland) and has been totally re-developed.

A few trees on the Mundia website
It might be worth contacting the owners of the trees for further information  :-\

From that source parents of Ellen Tipping were John Tippen(1819-1869) and Catherine Donnochie(1829-1869)
Daniel's parents given as James McNally and Helen Blenny

Hi my mother was Mary tipping.
Her great grandfather was john tipping married to Catherine both from Ireland and it appears to be the same family in 1861 census   in new monklands.

;) Hi Saupere, my maternal 4xgt grandmother was Sarah Tipping, her mother Mary Tipping, Sarah was born in the York area 1776, i believe thier is an Irish connection to the name Tipping, just starting out on my maternal side, not sure how Sarah's name changed from Tipping to Tippey, just wondered if you have found any name changes with your search.
All the best Derek :) :D ;)
