Title: Thomas Percival MORGAN
Post by: Ross1961 on Friday 09 March 12 07:30 GMT (UK)
Looking for information on THOMAS PERCIVAL MORGAN

Born 5 Jan c1900.  1970 Death certificate says he was born in YORKSHIRE.
1930 Marriage certificate says he was born in DUBLIN (marr Eva SLATER)
WW2 Nominal Roll states he was born in Craven Arms, SHROPSHIRE

He lied about his age (upping by 3 years) to get into WW1.  He lied about his age (lowering it ) to get into WW2.

He emigrated to Australia sometime around 1911 to NSW.

He supposedly had a brother - Arthur - that apparently did not emigrate to Australia with the family.  Heresay - had a sister (Ellen/Ellenor??) that died on board ship while emigrating.
It is also believed the parents MICHAEL MORGAN & ELIZABETH QUINN may have returned to the United Kingdom.

Thomas was such a story teller, no one really knows...

Any assistance would to great

Thank you

Suzanne

There is no birth registered for a Thomas Percival MORGAN anywhere in England or Wales - the closest I can see are these, although none matches very well with the info you have:

Thomas Percy MORGANS - Jun Q 1910  (Haverfordwest 11a 1478)

Percy Thomas MORGAN - Sep Q 1899  (Fulham 1a 258)

Percival Thomas MORGAN - Dec Q 1905  (Haverfordwest 11a 1253)

There doesn't seem to be a marriage for his parents in England/Wales either.   ???

I can see the WW2 listing on  NAA:  http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/using/search/

"MORGAN THOMAS : Service Number - N281122 : Date of birth - 05 Jan 1904 : Place of birth - CRAWEN ARMS ENGLAND : Place of enlistment - PADDINGTON NSW : Next of Kin - MORGAN EVA"

What name is he under in the WW1 listings?

I can only guess he went into the army under the same name for both WW.

This has been the hardest line of the family to track down.... so frustrating.  Too many embellishments over the years leaving us with very little hard fact to try to follow.

How do you know that?

The Australian cemetery index has his age as 74 at death in December 1970, suggesting he was born 1896.

The death index has him as aged 73, suggesting 1897

Also one of the public trees on Ancestry has the mother's name as Mary Elizabeth Quinn

I too saw have seen this public tree but don'[t know where they got from.  And maybe this is why I am having so much trouble because I am going what is the death certificate.  Eva may not have realised she was  giving the name she used when in fact her christened name Mary Elizabeth.

I just don't know whether he gave his correct age when he got back from the was or just lived by one of the fake birth dates.

I know I am not very helpful...sorry...

Have you found any official record of him before his marriage? Electoral rolls? WW1 service ? Immigration?

No... that's the bizarre thing.  I can not even find an  immigration date for either Thomas or his parents Michael & Elizabeth (or Mary Elizabeth) Morgan.

It's like they never existed before coming to Australia.  I can not find a departure for Michael & Elizabeth or a  death listing.

I don't know what to do anymore.   >:(

You mentioned his First World War service ... do you have medals from that period, or anything else with his service number ?

Mum told me about the stories that he told about the war and she does believe that he did have medals from the first war... but she does not know who got them.  One one of the stories was that he was wounded in the leg in WW1 and apparently patched up and sent back out to fight.  When he was finally repatriated back to Australia he supposedly still had a lump of shrapnel still in his calf.
