Looking for help in locating John McConaghy or his wife Nancy (McClaughling) McConaghy near Articlave or Bratwell. Also how do I best contact church, birth, death records? I'm from USA and new to searching?
-
Hi,
Any idea of dates?
Regards
-
Hi,
The IGI, part of familysearch.org, has four children of what may be your couple, John McConaghy and Ann (Nancy) McLAUGHLIN. The children were born in the Coleraine area.
13 Dec 1867 Mary Ann
25 Sept 1870 Annie
10 Apr 1873 Mary
27 Oct 1880 Elizabeth.
If the marriage took place before 1864 and the couple were Roman Catholic the marriage would not have had a Civil Registration and children born before 1864 would also not have been registered.
Regards

I know so much more after a year of piecing this together. John McConaghy and Ann (Nancy) McLAUGHLIN- I've verify through census for 1901 and 1911. Now looking for location of house. It is shown in the census at #12 Bratwell(Downhill, Londonderry). I know about were this is located via Google map and having visited the area several years ago. Does anyone know how to get a map of the area for 1901 that would show maps and house locations? The family is Presbyterian. I would like to locate any other relatives from that era. How could I access church records and/or cemetery records. The site maybe near Castlerock on the ocean to the north, Articlave and Downhill to the west. Any thoughts as to whom I can contact?

Looks like your John and Nancy in 1901- 12 is merely the enumerator's number on the census form-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Downhill/Bratwell/1517548
and in 1911- married 44 years, 13 children/11 living-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Downhill/Bratwell/588545
Some of the children-
Mary Ann (1867) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPYZ-BL5
Annie (1870) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FP7Q-L2X
1911 widow Millen with 2 daughters in parents' household
Robert (22 in 1901)
Thomas (22 in 1901)
Elizabeth/Lizzie (1880)
Maggie (16 in 1901)
Could Margaret Jane be their daughter? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KC41-M5V
Alexander (13 in 1901)
Samuel (8 in 1901)

hhi,, i seam to be researching the same family, tho new to this , my grandfather was alexander mc conaghie/mc conaghy/maconaghie, parents john and nancy from bratwell, by googleing 1st dunboe presbyterian church i found the baptism records of all nancy and johns children, including my grandfather alexander, i have photos of his brither samuel moody mc conaghie and lillie or elizabeth millen. i dont know where they are all buried but imagine it must be dunboe parish graveyard, according to their marriage cert, john and nancy were married 27th august 1867, she was 19 yrs old and her father was robert mc glaughlin, a tailor, his father was james a weaver. would love to hear if you have any further info, anne, ps i live in dublin, ireland

Anne- very nice to hear from you. I am very interested in learning more! I believe that John McConaghy is your Alexander's brother. John is my grandfather who immigrated to Rock Island, Illinois USA with brother Robert and sister Margaret Jane (Maggie). John and Nancy McConaghy would be my great grandfather and grandmother. They show up in the Census but I don't know much more. This is my greatest search interest. Others siblings of John, Robert, Margaret Jane and your Alexander would be Annie, Hannah, James, Mary, Samuel, Thomas, and Elizabeth. I know that they lived near Castle Rock.
So, what about John and Nancy McConaghy? I will ok for the church site that you mention. I'm very certain that the family is Presbyterian. How could I find the church and burial records? How could I get the copy of the marriage certificate. Then, lots of questions about the McGlaughlin family.
Please let me know that you receive this message. I am very excited about the contact. All of my McConaghy family is gone now. You are my only contact, so I very much appreciate any help. I live in Illinois, USA.
Thanks,
Dan

Hello everyone,
I seem to be searching for the same information, perhaps on the same family. Margaret Jane McConaghy married my Great Grandfather, Leander David in 1910, and my Grandfather, Benjamin John David was born June 3, 1911. They had a second son, George, I believe in 1914 or so, but George died at the age of 12, and I do not know why. I understand she came to the States through Canada and Detroit. I was do not know who she may have been traveling with at the time and have been unable to find any immigration information so far.
Her son - my grandfather - Benjamin John David, married Delores Elizabeth Meeker - and they moved out to California in the 1940's. Delores, was either born in Marshalltown or Davenport - I don't have my notes in front of me (they are packed away I need to find them), but she and my grandfather were from those towns, I just can't recall which one was from which town off hand.
I am aware of and I have pictures of both John and Nancy (McLaughlin) McConaghy, but that is all the info I have about them. I used to have info farther back but it was lost 30 years ago while relocating.
Does any of this match anything you have found regarding your family? Anyone is welcome to copies of the pix I have if you do not have any, if this is the same family tree.
Thanks,
Dianna
-
Dianne- thanks for the reply. You are the connection that I have been looking for several years. I am the great grandson of John and Nancy. I live in the USA. Margaret Jane McConaghy was my father's aunt. She is buried in Davenport, Ia about 10 miles from me. The David's and Ben were from Moline, Ill area. Ben called me from California just before he died. I had a great and long conversation with him. His daughter called me several years after his death. I believe that her name is Donna D. I have lost her last name and contact information. She lives in the Los Angeles area and I believe that she owned a machinery moving company.
I do not have photos of John & Nancy McConaghy. I would really appreciate that opportunity to have copies and any other information that you would have! I'd also like photos and any information that you might have for Leander & Margaret (McConaghy) David.
Ben was a great guy, very interesting. I'd like to be able to meet his family.
Thanks for the help,
Dan
-
Well, this is exciting! Donna was one of my aunts - the 3rd child of my Grandpa Ben and Grandma Dee - she passed away in 2005, just within a short time of my Grandpa. Marilyn, their first born was the owner of the machinery company. She has since retired.
I have some info posted on Find a Grave website. I've started virtual cemeteries there and I have a lot of info on my Facebook pages too. I guess we should take some of this conversation offline - since many of the people you are looking to connect the dots are still alive and I don't feel quite right about posting their info without their permission on a public page.
Have you stumbled onto this link yet? This is Margaret on her Wedding Day. I LOVE this picture. http://www.umvphotoarchive.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/scdpl/id/1388/rec/1
I have a few more family pix, some are packed as I just moved again (military), but I know about where they are. My father has a large book made by my Aunt Marilyn (his sister) with a lot of pix and stories as well that I'd like to get my hands on to scan.
I have not joined Ancestry.com yet, been thinking about it. Have you joined yet? If so, is it worth it?
I'm also thinking about springing for my brothers DNA swab test to see how far back we can trace our roots.
Can't wait to share more info, but I need to figure out on this site to provide private email to each other without sharing it with the world.
Anyway - I'm looking forward to learning more!
Thanks!
Dianna
-
Dianna- still looking to connect. I am on Ancestry.com and would share whatever I have. The tree that I have is very extensive and includes some of the David info. I also have some photos that you may have an interest in seeing as well.

hi dan and dianne, please forgive my late reply but i find this very difficult, i'm just learning, so my attempts in the past didnt work. i am so thrilled with the information you gave me dan about john, robert and margaret jane, i have since found photos of maggie jane and robert and their families, my husband is going to help me to forward these to you with a photocopy of the original marriage cert for john and nancy, lets hope it works. the only thing i can add to it at the moment is that their brother james emmigrated to rhodesia (now zimbabwe) he married edith and had two children who both contracted polio when they were very young, the little boy died and yvonne recovered and became a great friend of my mothers and visited us in ireland on many occasions, she passed away in zimbabwe about 5 years ago, we have cousins in coleraine who i think would be daughters and sons of lizzie mc conaghy, age 3 in 1911 census, i will try to make touch with them again. i would expect john and nancy are buried in the prosbyterian churchyard in dunboe as that is where they married and baptised their children, the address is : 1st dunboe presbyterian church, st paul's road, articlave, londonderry, BT51 4UN, northern ireland. i hope this is helpful and that i can send the photos, i will try to send privately, please bear with me,technology has moved alot faster than me, oh, its likely the mc conaghies originate in scotland and came to ireland aroun 1610 or there abouts but i have a long way to go before finding that, john would have died after 1921 as his name is on my grandfathers marriage cert, otherwise it would have said deceased or left blank, hopefully talk to you soon, anne

Anne- thanks for the note. I totally understand about the difficulty of navigation some of these sites. You are welcome to any information that I have. I've done a little research as to how you, Dianne and myself could post a private message (PM) on this site. See the info posted below in this note that I found on this site. You and Dianne may have to make a few more post to make the 3 postminimum. One we are all using the PM feature we could exchange email address or home addresses if that is easier for you. I'm ready. This very exciting and I don't want to lose track of you now that we have made this connection. Please le me know what you think about the PM, email addresses or home address as an option.
Dan
Personal Messages (PM)
RootsChat is all about community and communication for your family history research. And there are plenty of ways to communicate: Posting on the boards, Personal Messages (PM), E-mail, ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) and Yahoo Instant Messenger (YIM).
While e-mail is a good way to correspond privately with members, it has several drawbacks: You must open your e-mail application to write and send the message; the recipient must open his/her e-mail application; check his/her mail and your message will mixed in with all the other mail and it can take sometimes several minutes to an hour for mail to reach the recipient.
As an alternative to e-mail, RootsChat offers a faster, more private method. The Personal Messages system provides instantaneous delivery to the recipient's RootsChat Inbox. The mail is sent and received entirely through RootsChat, so neither you nor the recipient have to open another program or leave RootsChat. Private Messages also gives both the sender and recipient greater privacy: No one's e-mail address is revealed. Personal Messages show only the username and name of both parties.
If a recipient isn't online, Personal Messages wait in the member's RootsChat inbox until the next time they log in and then reads and/or deletes them. RootsChat Private Messages are a self-contained, highly private e-mail system.
In general, there is no limit to the number of PMs you may send or receive,
(although we do hope you will empty your Inbox and Outbox ('Sent Items') regularly).
New members must make at least three postings before being allowed to use the PM facility.
Please note: If you are sending PMs to new members who have less than three posts you will receive an error message, that your limit, or allowed number has been reached. (note that it says your limit, although it actually refers to the recipient.)
Attachments are not allowed on PMs
As the name says, Personal Messages are personal and private - do not publish PMs on the public boards !
-
Hello!
Sorry for not getting back on this page for a few weeks. Super busy around here!
I too am very excited about connecting with you both, and think PM is probably the best way to better connect. I'm looking so forward to connecting the dots and learning more about my family, past and present!
Thanks and have a great day today!
Dianna
-
Well done the three of you in 'finding' each other here!. It is ideal that you will be able to use the PM system to avoid revealing details of living persons. Remember, if any of you get 'stuck' and need further research help though, just post again on the forum boards. Enjoy your new found adventures in genealogy (and yes, it will become addictive).

For those of you tracing this family I wanted to add some information regarding Robert McConaghy born 1878. He immigrated to Iowa in 1904 and in 1905 he and my great-aunt Annie Hopkins McClelland, born in 1885 in Bratwell, Londonderry married. Two of their daughters survived to go on and have families. I have no information regarding Robert's parents but am happy to share the information I do have on his family.

Hello everyone,
I'm new here so sorry if I overstep protocols.
I am currently looking into my husbands lineage. We have traced his grandfather, Joseph McConaghy (McConachie) back to his birth in Shotts West, Scotland in 1905. Both of his parents were from Northern Ireland; John McConaghy (McConachie) 1877 Articlave, and Minnie Ross 1878 (Castlerock?)
However I am having a hard time tracking down birth records, church records, or anything showing which John McConaghy (McConachie) or Minnie Ross these might be.
John and Minnie migrated to the USA on the ship Columbia in 1906 and resided in Pennsylvania, PA, USA. Joseph married Anna Harriet Tucker. One of their children, Richard McConaghy is my husbands father.
If anyone has any information concerning John or Minnie it would be greatly appreciated. :)

Scottish birth certificate for 1905 should list date and place of parents' marriage- so, what's is listed on his birth certificate? If they married in Scotland then the marriage certificate will contain more details than an Irish one (Irish one would list residence of bride and groom, fathers' names & occupations, etc.)
Pennsylvania death records will show names of both parents (as given by informant).
From there you could use those details to find the correct birth registration and other information rather than merely guessing.
-
The Scottish birth certificate for Joseph shows the marriage date of John and Minnie as 1904 July 12th, Shotts West. However, looking for the marriage record itself comes up with nothing. Additionally, his death record only shows parents names and nothing else.
-
Think you might have mis-read the date but it only took me a minute to find this marriage on Scotland's People-
ROSS MINNIE & MCCONACHIE JOHN 1901 (year) 655/3 19 (ref) Shotts (Western District)
Once you view that you can post the details so we can start searching in Irish records.
-
Oh my goodness! The certified birth certificate I ordered literally says 1904, so I've been searching the wrong date! Blessed be ye! I'm looking for it now. :-)

The registration district for Bratwell is Coleraine not Londonderry.

You can view it pretty much instantly on Scotland's People site for a few credits. I just put 'Minnie Ross' in name box then clicked on marriages.

Changing Londonderry to Coleraine in Search should find them so....

I now know John's father was Joseph McConachie, and mother Mary McClemant.
Plus I have Minnie's parents names of William Ross and Eliza Jane McIntyre.

Apologies but it's been years since I've used this website. Not sure if this will reply to the person I'm intending it to 🙈 My great grandfather's sister was Minnie Ross who married John McConachie in Shotts Scotland! I am super excited to find this thread. Haven't even read it all yet. Thank goodness for Google!

Do you mean you've been a member under a previous username?
-
No sorry aghadowey. I meant I'm not sure how to reply to just one poster anymore. I assume everyone in the thread gets a notification?
But yes I did have a previous account but it must have been under a very old email. I've since read up and see I can't PM until I've posted 3 times. It's been almost 20 years since I had the time to do research and things have changed a lot on almost all of the sites I used to use.
The lady I am trying to reach posted last year and I see hasn't been on since :-[ Here's hoping she gets an email too. Her Joseph McConachie would have been my grandmother's cousin. I had the names Eliza Jane McIntyre and William Ross drummed into me at a young age. My nan said she never knew her grandparents from Ireland. And look! Eliza and her new husband were there in Shotts too in 1901 with Minnie and the rest of the family! How did my nan not know? I am beginning to think all my gr grandfather's family left Scotland as I can't find them after 1901. This might explain why I have so many 4th cousin DNA matches in Pennsylvania! How sad that my gr grandfather, Samuel Ross, felt he couldn't tell his own family. He made up a lie that his family had been murdered in Ireland and he ran away to Scotland aged 16 so he wasn't next.
I would love to know if there were any stories across the Pond of family left behind. Maybe find out why he fabricated this tale.
I'll go back and read the thread properly soon. It seems my husband may have ancestors from the same area but who believes in the accuracy of those DNA tests anyway 🙈🙈
Now to fight with this verification code. I'm not good with these.
-
Hello Deb Starr! Glad to meet your acquaintance. I understand you have some ties to the family through Minnie Ross and John McConachie. I would love to chat!
-
Hello! Lovely to hear from you :) Yes looks like Minnie was my great grandfather's sister. I'd love to hear about Minnie's family and if any information was passed down about family left behind or indeed if any other family members left Scotland and Ireland for the States. Not sure how to message privately on here or if we can being new accounts. You could look for me on Facebook maybe? I use the same name there. I'm not hard to find online.
