Title: Deleted my PMs by accident
Post by: RedMystic on Thursday 08 March 12 16:57 GMT (UK)
Is there a way to recover my Personal Messages?

I haven't downloaded some of the info from them, but when I was starting to screen & delete those I didn't need to keep, they ALL disappeared  :o ... techo peasant that I am.  ::)

Please, please, please tell me there is a way to recover them.

Many thanks,

I don't think there is.  I know I've done this in the past, it's really annoying.

you might be lucky and get the SysAdmin people to restore the last d/base backup .....

Sorry, but I think once they are gone that's it. However, perhaps the whoever sent you the information originally will have kept a copy or still have teh original information.

About 1.5 hours ago I deleted my PMs by accident.  :'( :'( :'( :'(

A Chatter in the Common Room suggested I contact the system administrator regarding a possible back-up or recovery (link attached).

I'm not sure how to contact a system administrator, but am desperate to retrieve the messages.

Help please.

Can you click on the "report to moderator" link on right hand side of post?

Awesome suggestion! Thanks japeflakes.

My understanding is that there is no way to recover lost PMs.  They are private and not available to anyone but you so any back up of the system would not hold them.  Sorry.  How annoying for you.

You aren't able to report your own post to moderator JF - I should know, I tried to do it once.

Well I did say "can!"

Anyway. I agree that once pm's have gone that is it....

Restoring from an older back-up is (relatively) easy,
if we want to restore the whole forum to that earlier date.

Notice "whole forum": this would mean that everything since that last back-up -- new topics, replies, PMs -- would be lost.

Restoring particular items from an older back-up is difficult, as you need to know exactly how replies, PMs, etc are stored in the database files and usually involves a lot of work, working directly on those files.  This can only be done by the system administrator, and on previous such occasions he has already said that it is simply too much work.

Sorry Red Mystic, but you'll have jot down as many names as you can remember, while it's still fresh in your mind, and ask them to resend their PMs to you.  Many members don't clear their outbox very often, so they should still have copies of what they've sent you.

regards,
Bob

Thanks for the response Bob. It's not what I wanted to hear, but I understand the horns of the dilemma.

I'll try to remember those that assisted on my various branches. ;)

Note to self: Don't use PM as a filing system to return to as back up for a future date. :'(

RedMystic, I know it seems to be a bit of trouble, but what I have been doing for some time with my posts is to copy them into a word document so that I can look at them without trying to remember which forum that one was on as against THAT one.

Works for me, especially where there are different forums for the same name.

It is a bit awkward but.........

Also have a look at the normal posts you have sent, it might help to jog the memory, as Berlin-Bob says.

Hope it helps.

Thanks a chesters. That will be my new plan.

I hate to bother those that have helped me in the past, but stupid techno-peasant me, apparently that is just what I'll need to do.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

Also a good idea. A feature of this forum's software is the (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/Themes/history/images/english/print.gif) button at the top and bottom of every topic page.

Don't panic .... the topic won't immediately be printed if you click on this, but it will be opened in a new window or tab in a printable format (no buttons, no avatars, no signatures, ... ). Use Ctrl-A and Ctrl-C to copy the whole topic and then, in your text program, use Ctrl-V to copy into the page.

If the topic has more than one page, then all pages will be shown, so this is useful to capture the whole topic "in one go".

It's also useful just for reading long topics without constantly clicking on the next page, but is less useful if there images in the topic, as no images are shown in the "print" format.

Ohh that's a major bonus - thanks Berlin Bob. Learn something new every day here  8)
Particularly useful for some of those VERY long scavenger hunts - took me ages to cut/paste page by page  :P

RedMystic - although you may have deleted PM's from your "In Box" check to see if there's anything in your "Out box". This might help in identifying who has previously sent you a message - if you've sent them a reply of course  ;D

Thanks for the hint Lady Di. Unfortunately all "innies" & "outies" are gone.  :o What ever I did to cause the elimination, I did it well. ::) ;D

What has been fabulous is that before I went to bed last night I posted the dilemma on 2 of the threads where family research had been done. A number of PMs winged themselves back to me through the night.

I know I won't recover all the lost ground, but I must say that Chatters are a wonderfully generous bunch when it comes to sharing their time & expertise - even when it's retracing the steps they took before. :) :) :) :)
