Hi,
I have the marriage certificate for a relative married St Clements Longsight Manchester 1929. The marriage was between Frederick Johnson and Annie Hicks. Their parents were James Johnson (dec'd) and Benjamin Hicks (dec'd).
My question is - What is a Bandman? James Johnson is noted as a Bandman. The only thing i can think of is that he said bandsman and they wrote bandman? The best match on the 1911 census is a Dairyman!
Any help would be appreciated

Hi,
I had a look on this site of Occupations and like you it is 'bandsman', sounds like a spelling error but you never know??
http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/index.html
"Bandsman - Worked on the ropes and pulleys (bands) in coal pit hoisting arrangements"
Maybe he was a musician and in a Band??
Cancan :)
