Title: Info about how my ancestor died in the Boer War
Post by: mandyweller on Tuesday 28 February 12 20:35 GMT (UK)
I have found quite a bit of information about my great uncle who fought in the Boer war and have been lucky enough to find letters that he sent home and also diaries. I know that he died in south africa in 1904 but would really like to be able to complete his story by knowing whether he died of injury or disease. I don't seem to be able to find service records on any web sites is anyone able to give me any pointers please for where to look

His name was Harrold Poulson - ( or could show as Paulson)
He was in the 7th Princess Royal Dragoon Guards - Service Number 5191 - Private
He set sail for South Africa on a ship that I think was called Lake Erie on  29th May 1901 and died there on 30th May 1904 aged 21
He was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal with 5 clasps
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated Thank you very much

Have you contacted the regiment at all? Or know anyone of the names of those who fought along side him?

I know that he fought alongside Could Be E Pratt his service number is 4682 I am trying to read from his father's diaries the writing is very small and not very clear as pages are very fragile

5191 Pte H Poulson was indeed serving with the 7th DG during the Boer War.
However he transferred to the 5th DG on 16/01/03

4682 Pte E Pratt was 5th DG, confirmed on the medal roll.

Boer War was over in 1902, so that's out as a cause.
Accidental injury or disease most likely.

If you look at the overseas death registers on FindMyPast, he's listed.
Will give you the reference needed to order a death certificate.

You do not need to know his regiment to order a regimental/overseas BMD certificate. You just give the details given next to his name - volume, page. year (?) - and apply here:

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/most_customers_want_to_know.asp#Overseas

If he died while serving the army would have destroyed his (WO97) record 20 years later. However it is always worth checking FindMyPast as he may have served in the Militia before becoming a Regular, and FindMyPast should have his WO96 papers.
