Title: HarryPoole & Elsie Poole nee Phillips
Post by: rotosis on Tuesday 28 February 12 05:00 GMT (UK)
Hi

I dont know much about Gloucestershire research, so was wondering if someone could give me ideas about how to find the above couple.

I think harry was born in 1907 I know he was born in Ashleworth, Gloucester.  The info given to me suggests he was born in 1905, however that cant be him due to the fact he died in March 1927 and my Harry Poole married in December 1927.

I have also been told that harry's fathers name was George Poole of "the quay" Ashleworth.  No mothers name.

This is all i have to work with.

Thanks for any help offered.

The first thing to do is to confirm Harry's father's name.
The marriage certificate or the birth certificate would confirm that.

Births, December qtr 1907
Gloucester district (which includes Ashleworth)    vol 6a, page 286

Poole, Harry

Assuming George is correct, this is the only match in the 1901 census:
Reference RG13, Piece 2423, Folio 103, Page 2
Nupend, Ashleworth

Poole, George  Head  M  34  Carter on Farm  b Coriap, Worcestershire
Poole, Sophia  Wife  F  35  b Ashleworth

You might want to check the 1911 census to get the names of Harry's brothers and/or sisters.
(We can't do it because of copyright restrictions)

And a marriage:
December qtr 1900
Gloucester district    vol 6a, page 651

Poole, George
Smith, Sophia

Using the free search facility on the 1911 census site I entered Harry Poole born Ashleworth 1907 +/- 1 and up came an entry. residence in the Thornbury district, So I then entered just the surname, born in Ashleworth and the district and got a
George Archa 1901, Sophia 1867, Harry 1907 and William henry 1904.

So I went to FreeBMD and looked for a marriage for a Sophia to a Poole and in Dec 1/4 1900 George Poole married Sophia Smith Gloucester vol 6a page 651.

!901 census RG13/2423/103/2
George Poole 34 Csrter on farm born Corcep? Worcester
Sopia 35 born Ashleworth

Thanks to both KGarrad and Crisanne for your help.  I am going to request that certs are brought to confirm info.

MY only worry now is that George was known as George Poole of "the Quay" Ashleworth, and now it looks like he wasnt born in Gloucester as the family info suggests.....if it is the right George, though i cant really find any other Harry Pooles in Ashleworth......

Thanks again for your help

George Poole, born c 1867 Worcestershire is proving elusive!
Can't find him in 1891 or 1881 or birth on FreeBMD.

So, your info may well be right!

While I can't mention the 1911, I can say that the county of birth that he writes there matches what we have so far?! :-\

Normally finding Smiths would be a nightmare!
But Sophia isn't a common name, and Ashleworth isn't that big!! ;D

Don't go too mad on certificates - it's costly!

Harry's death certificate will give you his date of birth, but not a lot else.
However, his marriage certificate will give you his age, his father, address (at time of marriage) and occupation.
His birth certificate will give you both parents names, and mother's maiden name.

Incidentally, the 1891 census has, in Ashleworth a John Poole (1867) married to a Sophy (age 18) with a son William (7months old)?!

I'm not sure what to make of this at all!! :-\

 :)

Typical for research, i will write you info down for notes and take it from there, sometimes they do change their first name.  I noted ont he other 1891 census that below Sophia Smith there was a boy called William Smith.........maybe they werent married.................lol, wouldnt be the first like that .

Me not paying for certs..................this is for somemone else i will see if htey know of death dates before they buy certs so no worries there.:)

Thanks :)

If this is immediate family of the person you are researching for, it's possible that they already have certificates somewhere?
Usually in a shoebox, in the attic! ;D

I'm pretty sure we have the right parents for Harry, as I couldn't find ant other Harry, of the right age, in the 1911 census.
Cisane gave you info from the 1911 free indexes (probably www.1911census.co.uk) - see reply #2.

Yes i saw answer too........very interesting :) and i have thanks Cris.

They dont have certs available to them...........................been told by family that they are all lost or gone..........................strange i must admit.

However if they want proof of line, pay they will.

Have sent email to ask about Harry's death, which i think (like you) is 1995.  If they can confirm at least that and if htey can then find out where he is buried, maybe something on the headstone.

Death certs in 1995 have quite good info on them.

Roto

PS  Thanks for the date of birth

Just found this from 1871!
Reference RG10, 2611, 90, 10
Nupend, Ashleworth    That sounds familiar!

Pool, Henry  Head  M  29  Fisherman  b Athleworth
Pool, Caroline  Wife  F  28  b ?Elanprice?
Curtis, James  Visitor  M  9  Scholar  b Staunton
Pool, Ann  Daughter  F  6  b Athlewaite
Pool, John  Son  M  5  b Athlewaite
Pool, George  Son  M  3  b Athlewaite
Pool, Elizabeth  Daughter  F  2  b Athlewaite
Pool, Henry  Son  M  3 days  b Athlewaite

I'm not saying this is the correct George, but it's too much of a coincidence!

Just an update on George Poole.  He was the right one, I found an inquest with Sophia Poole of they Quay  as a witness.  Other than a cert this will now confirm the couple.

I have not had much look with Elsie Phillips though, other than knowing that she marrie dHarry in 1927 at Devonport, Devon, England die to him been in the Navy.  They had at least two children, still waiting for replies on that.

Thanks again for all your help. :D

Thank you.

HI,
Came across your enquiry's about George Poole of the quay Ashleworth ,a George Poole was my Grandfather / great grandfather he died before I new him but can remember my mother Brenda Poole telling me tales of him as he was quiet a caricature in the village and was mentioned in a book written by the local canon that lived in the manor house . I can remember seeing a old photo of my mother and him outside their(http://) old home down by the boat inn , the buildings are no longer there, there were I think 4 one bed houses up some old stone steps .they moved to the old barracks then which is just up the road I have faint memories of living there as my parents stayed with my nan for a short time and have a couple of old photos many of which has been lost over time , I do know George was involved in searching for the head of the body found at the hawbridge Tirley in 1938 but I cannot help with the year of his death , my nan died at the age of 95 with us in Tirley I was about 4 or 5 i think , as far as I know there was only two children, Brenda rose Poole and her sister Betty but our family was not the closest and I can remember somthing about my mum being brought up by her nan which is why I say grandfather / great grandfather I have tried to attach a photo of my nan and my mum . regards Ken

Hi This is the picture of my Nan taken in the early 1950's in rear gardens of the old barracks ,the way she is dressed is the only way I remember her in a pinnie and with that broach of a bird on .If you do find the book could you please let me have the title I read it years ago as my Mum had it but like a lot of things they go missing over the years. I do remember it was written by canon Gillespie as i remember his window walking her big red setter dogs around the village.

Hi

I think your Nan's name was Sophia Smith. She was born in 1865 and died in 1960. Second wife to George Poole.  They had three sons. No idea which one belongs to your mother as yet. I don't think it's Harry Poole born 1907, I only have two children for him...though just found another...The Poole family is quite large and it gets hard attaching the right kids to parents without certificates.

Your Nan also reminds me of my sister in law. I have a feeling if this is Sophia, then it is her nan as well.

Private Message me if you wish.

Hello all, I know it's been a while since this thread was created, but I wonder if anyone can assist. I am the great great grandson of George and Sophia Poole and wondered if there were any photographs of George still out there. I have several of Sophia and even the bill for her funeral, but only one photograph of George, a blurry image of him at the back of Archie and Florence's wedding (my great grandparents). Despite the blurriness, I can see a flower between his teeth. I am told this was not unusual and he rode round Ashleworth on a red tricycle in latter years. He was a soldier in the Boer War and the First World War. I would love to see a better picture of him and would like very much to talk with anyone who has any stories about him. Kind regards, Daniel

George and Sophia Poole don't have a stone, they're buried somewhere towards the back of the cemetery at Ashleworth.

I am still hoping to get in touch with olgit if anyone can assist, I'd be so grateful.

Kind regards,

Here is Harry and Elsie Poole's grave stobe at Ashleworth cemetery which I visited on the 18th October 2025.

My great grandfather George Archie Poole (1901-89) and my great grandmother Florence May Poole nee' Taylor (1895-1977) are buried next to the front gate, just as you come in on the left. They have no stones. They're buried next to my great uncle Verdun Raymond Taylor (1916-1959).

Hi Daniel

This research was started for my sister in laws father back in 2012 for his birthday. I have a feeling he married a HYETT, thought can't be sure without looking. I made a book for him which will have a descendant report in it. I'm not sure if I still have the book, though will get someone to look for you.

If you private message me then we can exchange emails.

Thank you! I have sent a PM.

In my last post I should have typed George Archie Poole (1901-1990), he died aged 89, 35 years ago today.
