Title: James LEE - Grocer - The Rocks
Post by: may164 on Saturday 25 February 12 07:59 GMT (UK)
I am searching for any descendants of James Lee arrived Australia 1857 from Canton he had 10 children:
James, Willie,Minnie,George,Esther,Peter,Sydney,John, Frederick and Barbara.
His wife was either Kate,Kate Florence or Lizzie and the said marriage was in Wagga in 1880.
James died aged 58 in 1897 in The Rocks. I would be looking for anyone knowing if his young wife re married and if there are any known descendants out there!

They didn't have the children you have listed in NSW. Could you provide a little information, please?

Yes the first three born in Tumut, then 1 in Cowra, then 2 in Bathurst, then 4 in Sydney. variations of as James, Jimmy, Kate, Catherine. thanks for your interest. it is the marriage that does escape me, Wagga mentioned on birth certificate and his death certificate.

Have you considered putting all your research names landscape, rather than portrait?

Your James or Lee may be a bit hard to track >:(

I dont know if his English was all that good and I dont know if those at registries were all that good at taking down the correct information but the closest I can get to his correct name is....

Ref# 6973/1882  (Surname) LEEFEE LEE ON KWONG
A Son ELIJAH His Father LEE His Mother LIZZIE
and he was born at NEWTOWN in 1882

From what is above I feel his first name was actually Kwong.  ???

Hi there,

Sands Directory 1895 Sydney
James LEE, 82 Gloucester St (JM notes this is in The Rocks district)
James LEE, 99 Gloucester St (see JM notes above)
James LEE, 25 Brandling St Alexandria
James LEE, 18 Campbell St Erskineville
James LEE, 15 Victoria St Redfern
James C LEE, Wallace St Hurstville.

Then there’s all the entries just for J LEE ....    .... None under KWONG in that particular Directory, sorry.

Another suggestion :

Check out the City of Sydney Assessment Books,  GIPPS WARD would cover THE ROCKS ....

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,369703.0.html This is the NSW Resources Board and it includes the links: City of Sydney Assessment Books
http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/assessmentbooks/
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=499593.0

And  ;D If you establish a link to either of the two James LEE chaps listed in Gloucester St circa 1895, then don’t overlook using Mr Google to look for info about the BIG DIG of the 1990s at The Rocks.

Cheers,  JM

Another possible,
Married Wagga Wagga 1878 Mr Ah Cann First name Tommy, Married Elizabeth White Ref # 4999/1878.

As per previous posts there is no marriage of James Lee in Wagga.

What I believe I know now; is that the name changed several times as they moved about. ???

I believe this Elizabeth White was born in Tumut 1862 to Richard and Sarah if you check you will see that an awful lot of female White's married in Wagga in the period 1870 to 1890. :o

I would suggest the White Family moved there after Tumut maybe. ::)

James, Willie,Minnie,George,Esther,Peter,Sydney,John, Frederick and Barbara.
the first three born in Tumut, then 1 in Cowra, then 2 in Bathurst, then 4 in Sydney

These would probably be the births referred to:

28516/1882    LEE    JAMES    JAMES    KATE    TUMUT
31115/1883    LEE    WILLIE    JAMES    KATE    TUMUT
33547/1885    LEE    MINNIE    JIMMY    KATE    TUMUT

8113/1887    LEE    GEORGE H    JIMMY    KATE    COWRA

14913/1889    LEE    PETER F    JAMES    CATHERINE    BATHURST
6293/1890    LEE    EASTER    JAMES    CATHERINE    BATHURST

1368/1892    LEE    SYDNEY    JAMES    KATIE    SYDNEY
19236/1895    LEE    JOHN S    JAMES    CATHERINE    SYDNEY
19237/1895    LEE    FREDERICK M    JAMES    CATHERINE    SYDNEY

I don't see Barbara.

I would suggest that if you want to find out what happened to Catherine you first need to find who she was.  Any of the children's birth certs will give you a maiden surname and a place of birth.

Thank you to everyone. So far I have one birth certificate and the mothers names is Kate Webster. On her husbands death certificate her name is Lizzie Kerr, though the undertakers wife was ELIZABETH KIRBY (so I was thinking there may be a bit of artistic licence there) and on one childs mariage certificate the mother is Kate Florence, so I have  many names to work with. I know chinese/european marriages were a combination of names and therefore is very hard to trace. There was a marriage with a JAMES INGLIS (ENGLISH) that I may need to look at.

Hi may164,

You may have seen that the LEE boys, James, George and Peter were not on their best behaviour and spent periods of time in gaol.  James and George even teamed up in 1907 and received 12 months and two years respectively.  Their gaol photographs and rap sheets can be purchased quite cheaply from the NSW archives. http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexesold/searchform.aspx?id=22

Sidney/Sydney was admitted to the training ship Sobraon in 1905, and this record may mention whether his mother was still living or remarried.

Sidney LEE
Birth Year: 1893
Birth Place: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Date Received: 3 Feb 1905
Ship: Sobraon
Father's Name: James LEE
Mother's name: Catherine LEE

I don't have access to the full record but perhaps someone else might be able to have a look for you.

Thanks, Debra for pointing out the record for Sydney on the Sabraon.

The information  from the Entrance Book is quite detailed.

He was 'found sleeping in the open air'
Committed at the Water Police Court, Sydney, 3 February, 1905
Name: Sidney LEE, born Gloucester St, Sydney April 1893, Roman Catholic
Can read and write, Attended Public School, Goulburn St
Character: Bad. Once previously before the Magistrate's Court for receiving property which was suspected to be stolen and discharged to the care of his mother. No Police report as to antecedents. Companions: bad
Was committed as he is under 16 years.
Father James LEE deceased.
Mother Catherine LEE, laundress, 2 Little Hill St, off Macquarie St, Surry Hills , proposes to pay 2/6 per week toward his keep. (there is the word 'eleven' and another word I can't see coz it's in the fold of the page - I think it's her salary)  Mother's character believed by police to be good.

Catherine LEE gave evidence: She is a widow.  The boy is 13 years old and truants from school.  She can control him when he is alone.
Constable David RANKIN found the boy sleeping in Phillip Park accompanied by another boy.  When awakened said he wanted to get to the baths early.

Petitions were taken June 07, April 08, June 08 and he was discharged to his parents (sic - not named) 29 Sept 08.

Thanks for that Judith  ;D

It is so nice to see a record with lots of detail.  Poor Catherine must have been in a constant state of despair over her naughty boys!
