Title: Help please to find Hugh BALDWIN birth/ death or maririage
Post by: terngirl on Saturday 25 February 12 00:15 GMT (UK)
Folks, again stuck on my BALDWIN family  :-\

I do not have a birth/death/marriage date for Hugh BALDWIN, my gggg grandfather.

He appears on my ggg grandfathers marriage cert. His name is George BALDWIN b. about 1812 in Westminster I do not have a date of death for him either.

He married in 1837 to Sarah Ann  ELLIS in St Martins in the Field.

Hugh's occupation on George's marriage cert is Cordwainer. I cannot find a census that links Hugh with George. Also not having his wife's name does not help.

Any help greatly appreacted  :)

Cheers and thanks in advance

Hi,

George had a late baptism.

His date of birth was 19/07/1812 & he was baptised on 03/04/1822 at St Margaret Westminster. Parents Hugh (shoe maker) & Elizabeth Baldwin. Address was York Street.

G'day folks and thanks for your responses  :)

Reyz, already looked at this one and discounted it, thanks anyway for looking

Sharon, I think you are spot-on. I have just found out from a cousin that Hugh was married to an Elizabeth as you rightly mentioned.

Her name in fact in NIBLOW and with a name like that there will be plenty of variations on it. I don't know anything at all about her so the search continues. Any help with her would be fabulous and greatly appreciated.

Cheers and thanks  ;D

Hugh Baldwin married Elizabeth Niblow on 12/09/1798 at St Mary's Lambeth.
Witnesses were James Miller & Elizabeth Cleever

G'day Sharon

Thanks for that. I have already added that into my tree and should have mentioned the marriage. I guess my wall is Hugh and where he was born/died/siblings/parents etc.

I think there could be  a Middlesex or Lambeth connection but not sure.

Other than the above mentioned marriage we (my cousin and I who are working on this tree) cannot find anything else on him or Elizabeth. Its still early days with her as we have only just found her surname.

Shall keep digging  :)

Many thanks

Think I have found Hugh Baldwin's burial in London - there is only one likely candidate:

Hugh Baldwin 58 (bc.1772), bur.31/12/1830 Chelsea Royal Hospital.

Seeing as where he was buried it seemed that he must have been a soldier at one time and indeed he was.

I found a brief service record but it has information to hopefully enable you to proceed back further:

Private Hugh Baldwin, Grenadier Guards - born Chorley, Lancashire, enlisted at age 22 and served 22 years 128 days- but in consequence of Rheumatism considered unfit for further service.   He was then 44 years of age, 5'7", Dark Hair, Hazel Eyes, Fresh Complextion, By Trade a Shoe Maker.

Enlisted 14/3/1794, Discharged 19/7/1816 Whitehall.

Hi, Delighted to find folks looking for Hugh Baldwin b abt 1916 in Dublin. He was my 2nd great grandfather. I have marriage certificate 2 Aug 1840 when he married Ann Bentley in Halifax. Census info said he was from Ireland and cordwainer. Died in Bradford 4 Jan 1863.

An other gentleman and I have come up empty handed in looking for birth but on the marriage certificate it says is father is Hugh Baldwin occupation Custom and Excise. My mother handed down what turned out to be a fairy tale of the family disinheriting him for eloping and marrying. Stories abounded of him being an educated man but on his marriage certificate both he and Ann just marked Xs. My details as far as they go are on pickfamily.com.

I never heard of a brother George, so if folks can add to info on both Hughs I would be delighted to hear.

G'day Steve

I think your Hugh BALDWIN and my Hugh BALDWIN are two different gents. I am fairly confident that mine is English. Although they share the same occupation - cordwainer I think that where the similarities end.

My Hugh married an Elizabeth NIBLOW in England.

Good luck with your searching.

Cheers
Tern.
