I assume she was a spinster when she married

hi

thanks for your reply. so sorry, should have said born 1880/1881. Johnson was her maiden name. after her marriage she lived in Battersea with Joseph Notley. They had 4 children - 2 boys and 2 girls but the girls both died before they were 1 (i think)

thanks again for your reply :)

Hi

In the 1901 census she is Catherine Notley - age 20 - birth about 1881 in Kensal Green London

Spouse's name Joseph Notley

The civil  parish they are living in is Battersea
Registration district Wandsworth
piece 444
folio 40
page number 23

hope that is the reference you mean?

Thanks  :) hadn't thought of trying different spellings. Knowing my luck with this branch of the family her maiden name will probably not be Johnson! (this has happened with other ancestors.)

Thanks for your suggestion :)

Hi

Do you have a copy of her marriage certificate? if not

10 April 1898 St George's Battersea

Joseph Notley, 22, bachelor, labourer, 33 Nine Elms Lane, father Thomas Notley, Plumber
Catherine Johnson, 18, spinster, 26 Woodgate Street, father William Johnson, Road repairer

thanks Dawn - yes I do have a copy. It is the earliest record I can find. As her father was a road repairer I am beginning to think the family may have moved around a lot.

Just to confuse things I note the 1911 census states birth place is Kensal Green (*)

still tearing my hair out about this. ??? i have found a record (1881 census) for a william johnson - widower and children:
Maryann
George
Frederick
Maria
James - not kensal green?

all born kensal green. Is it possible Catherine was born in 1881 and is not on the census for some reason? Maybe in hospital?

any suggestions gratefully accepted.

The 1881 census was taken on the 3rd of April, if she was born after that date she would not appear.

Can you please post the reference for that census or the ages of the children so we can find it.

This is the family in 1891 living in Chelsea

RG12/56/44/20

William Johnson  h. m    56 Monumental Mason b Stonebridge London
Kate Johnson    30  b not sure about place of birth
George H Johnson    21  b Willesden
Frederick W Johnson    20  b  Willesden
James H Johnson    13  b. Kensington
William Johnson    7  b. Willesden
Maria Johnson    15 b. Kensington
Mabel Johnson    6  b. Willesden.

The reason I looked at this next census was to see if the childrens ages were consistant, which they are I asked one of the moderators which registration district would Kensal Green/ Rise come under, evidently at some time  it was part of Chelsea.

As you can see the other children are not given as Kensal Rise on this one.

I found a birth registration of a Catherine Johnson Dec.q 1878 Chelsea 1a - 291 so trying to see if she would fit in with the other children.

Although James H ages gives him born in 1878 , I think this is his actual birth reg....... James Henry Johnson, Dec q. 1879  Kensington 1a - 4 so its quite pheasable for Catherine to be his sister although I cannot be 100% sure.

But I still cant find her in 1881 though  :(

hi

i couldn't find a record for 1891 so thank you :) have now looked at it.

it seems that  William Johnson remarried because in 1881 he is a widower and in 1891 has a wife called Kate. I have found a record for his marriage in 1882 to a Kate Lean but as my catherine johnson does not appear on the 1891 census i am beginning to think she is not connected to this family. Pity :(

i may take a chance and request the birth certificate of the record you found for Dec quarter 1878. am also considering getting a copy of her son Joseph Notley's birth certificate in case it gives alternative christian or maiden name.

many thanks for finding the info - would love to know more about this lady but i guess its not always possible to track people down.

Have also found a potential Catherine -  in London and dates match.

Page 36

the place where this Catherine is living may still have records so will try and and check it out.

Still on the trail. Have been looking at marriage records for Joseph Notley's siblings in case a Johnson shows up as a witness :)

Have found a potential signature ??? I'm not brilliant with computers so am not sure how to post a copy of the signature I am interested in. If anyone could look up the following record and help me decipher the surname of the first witness I would be really grateful. First name is definitely William.

Record is Ada Notley m George Bunce 12/04/1903 Borough Wandsworth
Parish Battersea St George the Martyr.

Many thanks :)
