Hi,
I wondered if anyone could help. I'm looking for a marriage of Louis/Lewis Gaffney to Mary A. ? Mary was born in Kingstown, Ireland in 1937, Louis was born c1831. They had their first child in Ireland, then moved to Liverpool. Louis died in the Liverpool workhouse in 1879 aged 48 (I'm awaiting his death cert). Just can't seem to find a marriage for them.
Many thanks ;)

Do you have any idea when and where the marriage took place ?
If they were RC and it took place before 1864 then you will need to search for church records...
do you have details of the child born in Ireland - i.e. name, year and place of birth ?
see : Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html)

Hi,
Ni I don't know where the marriage took place. Their first born Michael was born in 1861 in Dublin.
Thanks
Wendy

....
Their first born Michael was born in 1861 in Dublin.
...
Michael's birth was before civil records in Ireland ... did Louis and Mary have any children in England ?
A cert for one of them would give you Mary's maiden name.
The problem is "Dublin" is not very specific as it can mean the city, the county or the suburbs and you usually need a more specific location like a parish..
Have you found Michael on later census returns to see if he give a more detailed place of birth ?

allowing a little leeway for the year of birth - there's a possible baptism match for Michael to a Louis Gaffney and Mary Anne Kennedy in 1859 in St. Andrew's RC parish in Dublin City on IrishGenealogy
see : Baptism of Michael Gaffney, 6 Fade Street, 1859 (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/9485cf0232378)
Gaffney is a reasonably common surname, so I'd confirm the maiden name by cross-checking against a birth cert for one of the English born children... assuming he had some siblings

Thanks for that I really can't believe how stupid I am at times!! I've been researching my family history now for about six years and of course I know that the mother's maiden name can be gleaned from a birth certificate :-[ It was her maidem name that I'm trying to find. So thank you for that jolt I'll get on and order a birth certificate. Mary did have two more children in England!!
Big thanks!!

You're an absolute star! I'm sure that entry is correct Mary was Mary A and Louis (I've found) is very uncommon.
Many thanks
-
if that's the correct couple - then there are at least three other children - two older and one younger than Michael..
Baptism of John Gaffney, 18 May 1853
Baptism of Maria Anna Gaffney, 15 Kenedy's Lane, 10 Dec 1857
Baptism of Lewis Gaffney, 3 Fade St., 1862

Wow. I have found Michael, William, Christopher and Elizabeth the latter three having been born in Liverpool. I'll send off for a birth certificate to see if Mary's maiden name was Kennedy.
Cheers!

Hiya,
I have managed to establish, with your help, and birth and death certificates that Lewis Gaffney did marry Mary Kennedy. Could you tell me how I can find their marriage and how do I go about ordering a certificate?
Many thanks,
Wendy

The marriage of Lewis and Mary was before 1864, and they were RC - so there will be no marriage cert, but should be a church record of their marriage. The problem is establishing where this took place.
The IrishGenealogy website mentioned earlier has most of the RC parish records for the city and a few for county Dublin, but does not have records for Kingstown/Dún Laoghaire.

Okay, many thanks.

The are Transcripts of some South Co. Dublin RC parishes available on the pay-website of the Irish Family History Foundation at www.rootsireland.ie
Kingstown/Dun Laoghaire is included, as are some of the neighbouring parishes, but note that some of these dont have any records back to the 1850s

Hi I have just seen your post Michael Gaffney was my Great Grandfather and he was born in 6 Fade Street Dublin I have confirmed this as his mother was Mary Anne Kennedy and is listed on several baptism records for other children I have found that there were 8 Sons and 3 Daughters, what branch of the family are you from. :)

Hi Wendy
My Grandmother Mary Gaffney went to live with your Great Grand Mother Elizabeth when both her parents died she was only 14.
I have put a post about the Gaffneys on, it is for William Gaffney who story has it was on Vaudeville, do you have any information about him? also I am in contact with Elizabeth Gaffneys Grand daughter who told me that the Gaffney Family emigrated to the USA but did not like it and came back to England and settled in Liverpool were she had 5 more children, Richard, William, Maria Anna, Christopher and Elizabeth
-
Hi,
I have spoken with mum she remembers that her aunty Mary lived with her 'Ganny Lizzie' but sadly doesn't know anything about William Gaffney.
Warm regards,
Wendy

Hi Wendy,
I'm looking for information on Michael Gaffney from Dublin that married Elizabeth (Eliza) Connor, they had two children Christopher and Elizabeth.
Do you think this is the same Michael Gaffney you have on your side? Elizabeth died in the Church Street Tenement collapse in Dublin in 1913 but it seems Michael had maybe died before her as she was married twice.
Thanks,
-
