Title: Joseph Chidlow
Post by: hatton65 on Thursday 23 February 12 18:48 GMT (UK)
I have found my 2nd great grandfather his name was Joseph Chidlow and was born in market drayton in 1834 but I cannot find out who he married, it was Ann on the census form of 1891 and they lived in Prees I think it says back lane.

I have found the family in census 1871, 81,91 and 1901, I am certain it is the right family as Leah went to Marry Joseph Smith ?? What a name to look up hey but they are defo my Grans parents. On the cesus Thomas is the Grandson so they must have another child born old enough to have a child who wasnt on the census. Think it must have been a son as the baby's name is Chidlow too.

I know that Leah was my Great Grandma (Josephs daughter)

I also cannot find anything about their son who was 20 (on the 1891 census) his name was John Chidlow.

Hope somebody can help

Hello, and welcome to RootsChat!

There is a possible marriage for Joseph and Ann registered in Market Drayton in 1863, but to be 100% sure, you really need a birth cert for one of their children to confirm her maiden name:

Marriages Mar 1863
(possible spouses - 2 others on same page)
CHIDLOW  Joseph
PALIN  Ann
Mt Drayton 6a 1075

This is the reference for Leah's birth:

Births Sep 1868
CHILDOW  Leah
Wem 6a 731

This could be John in 1901 - his occupation matches 1891:

RG13/2554/36/6
Crackmoor Lane, Prees, Shropshire

John CHIDLOW  Head  31  Baker  b. Hodnet, Shropshire   (town hard to read, and looks as if it's been crossed out)
Annie CHIDLOW  Wife  34  b. Hodnet
George CHIDLOW  Son  7  b. Prees
Joseph CHIDLOW  Son  5  b. Prees
John CHIDLOW  Son  3  b. Prees

Where would be the best place to order a birth certificate from.  I have access to ancestry.co.uk.  How much would it cost? thanks it seems a silly question but I seem to get thing wrong so from now on I am going to ask instead of struggling.  I did have Ann Palin on my tree but needed some reassurance.

Thanks again John Chilow (the baker) says born in Hodnet - is this prees that is what confuses me, but i think this is the right tree ( i did look at this a few weeks ago ).

You can order a certificate online from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ - it will cost £9.25.

Ask as many questions as you like - we were all new once!

Thanx for the map, when you don't know the area it seems a million miles away, here in sunny Widnes it does anyway.   :)

Hello All

I ordered a birth Certificate for Leah Chidlow born (15 September) 1868 and on it - it says her father was Joseph Chidlow (by the way his occupation say farm labourer - I think) and mother Ann Chidlow (formerly Jeffreys). I cannot find a marriage for them.

I was convinced her name was Ann Palin.

Could it have been that Ann Married a Palin before she married Joseph
or
There is a death for Ann Chidlow in 1965 - could this have been his 1st marriage to Ann Palin and he went on to marry Ann Jeffreys.

How is it I can't find a marriage for them?

I have now ordered a birth certificate for Mary Ann Smith - Leah's eldest daughter and my Grandmother just to check for certain I have the right family tree, but I am sure I have the right tree.  I will know next week

Thanks Andrea

I have got the birth certificate for Mary Ann Smith born 6 oct 1894, it comfirms leah chidlow and joseph smith are her parents,

Leah chidlow's born 15 September 1868 comfirms joseph smith and Ann Chidlow formaly Jeffreys.

Ann would have been 36 when she had Leah

Also on the 1871 census and 1881 census it says that Thomas a grandchild is living with them.

Did Joseph have other children who were old enough to have a child when they were starting the new family.

I still cannot find the marriage of Joseph to Ann Jeffreys

I couldn't find the Chidlow/Jeffreys marriage anywhere either!

It may be interesting that Thomas given as Chedlow on Ancestry in 1891,is given as a boarder with a Williams family in Prees. Also given as a boarder is an unmarried Martha Chidlow given as born in Bilston Staffordshire in c 1855-RG12/2124/14/1.

I can't find this Martha anywhere in 1861.

This Thomas is definitely named as the son of this Martha in 1901,this time Martha is given as born in Prees in c 1855-RG13/2554/14/5.

Transcribed on Ancestry as a marriage between a Joseph Chidler and an Ann Jefferies,it took place in the Wolverhampton District in the Apr/May/Jun quarter of 1854.The Volume is 6b,the page number is "scrambled".Maybe someone can look for this marriage on another resource to give you the correct Page number?

Hi William
That fantastic thank you very much, I will look at the info you have found later on but fingers crossed it who we are looking for, it sounds right and we did think Mather was unmarried, she would have been 15 when she had thomas, I think she was working as a servant in the 1871 census,  it's funny though I found her in a later census and she put thomas as her brother, maybe joseph and Ann brought him up as their own ??? They did that in them days.

thanx Andrea

Hi
I have just discovered your postings regarding the Chidlow family and Thomas is my great grandfather! His mother was indeed Martha (daughter of Joseph Chidlow) and she was unmarried when she had Thomas in 1871. He was born in the workhouse and brought up by Joseph and Ann as their son John was of a similar age.
Eventally Thomas and Martha lived together again according to the later census.

Sorry my computer went funny and I couldn't finish my message -
Who did Thomas marry and who were his children, also which workhouse was Thomas born in,  it all so interesting.  I have been compiling stories of Leah and Joseph (Martha's sister) if you want me to send you what I have so far just let me know.

I have worked out (i think) that Thomas was my 3rd cousin ( 1st cousin 2 times removed).

I think you might be my 6th cousin (1st cousin 5 times removed) it all sounds so strange doesn't it.

Like I have said - if you want to ask anything just do so

Thanx, regards Andrea

I have been trying to sort this tree out for the last 6 years or more so I have amassed quite a lot of information so may be able to help you too!
I will look through my many bits of paperwork and see what I can find.
Thomas married Eliza Jane Jones and they had three children, one being my nan Dorothy Chidlow.
The name does seem to change as it goes back to Chidler just to make things more complicated lol!
I will try to message you too.
