Can some one please help me find my 3 times great grandmother Bridget Whelan. I have been looking for her for 16 years, this what I know already:
Bridget Brennan married Patrick Joyce in 1840 in Co.Mayo, Ireland. Three months later they sailed for South Australia.and settle in Kapunda, they had 5 children. Then tragedy struck, Patrick was kill in a cart accident in 1852.
Six months later Bridget Joyce married John Whelan and had 3 sons (only 1 survived) Hugh Whelan. John Whelan drowned in 1856. On 27th May 1863 Bridget married a Samuel Heigh, this is were I'm not sure if I have the right marriage.Bridget died in 1864 and Samuel died in 1897. I cannot afford certificates.
Thank you
Appreciate any help and advise

I don't think the 1863 marriage would be your Bridget as she is listed as 28yo, single & her fathers name given as Michael WHELAN.
HEIGH Samuel age 28yrs m. WHELAN Bridget age 28yrs, single, 27/05/1863
Place: St Patrick Adelaide; District: Ade; Symbol: V; Book/Page: 54/228
Groom's Father: Mathew HEIGH
Bride's Father: Michael WHELAN

Do you have any more information about Hugh WHELAN? Birth, Death, where he lived etc. It might give us some idea about his mum Bridget.

You have given a death date for Bridget as 1863. As it seems that the marriage to Samuel HEIGH may not be your Bridget, is the death date based on her having the surname HEIGH? Sorry not very well explained; hope you know what I mean!
Do you have the names of her JOYCE children? Again, it may help.

I like to thank each of you for answering my query about my 3 times great grandmother Bridget Whelan. I now know that Samuel Heigh did not married my Bridget.
Some of you want the names of the children, here goes.
Mary Ann Joyce (b) 1841/42 (my line)Patrick (b)1845 John (b)
1845 (d)1846 Michael (b)1846 Catherine Martha (b)1850 John Henry (b)1851.Patrick the father died 1852,Bridget married John Whelan 12/7/52 at Kapunda. The Whelan children are Thomas (b)
1854 (d)1856 Hugh (b)1856
John the father died 1856 and this is were I have lost the trail for Bridget.
Thank you again

Hi
Regarding Hugh Whelan, I was told many years ago that his wife was Bridget. I never found his marriage But after reading his OB I found that h is wife was Rachel Kierney. I found his marriage in 1877 with the BDM now on line. They never had any children.
Also in his OB was were they lived: The Seven-Stan Hotel in Aneas Street,Hnsine (abb.) This seemed strange?
By the way the 2 daughters went to New Zealand to live, Mary Ann married Austin O'Loughlin November 1858 in Kapunda had a son John in Turo, another son Martin in Ballarat, Vic. the third son Thomas was born in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Hi. I don't think Hughie (Hugh Whelan) is one of your relatives, although not 100% sure. We think he was the 5th child of Hugh & Margaret (Biddy) Whelan (Wheelan) , from Tipperary, who arrived on the Sibella 18th March 1852:- http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?dateFrom=1850-01-01&l-advstate=South+Australia&sortby=dateAsc&q=hugh+wheelan+Whelan+sibella
The obituary in Trove was uncorrected text, it actually reads he died in the Seven Stars Hotel in Adelaide. We think that branch of the Whelans lived in Kent Town, they had a connection to Logue's Brewery and went on to manage several hotels. His uncle Darby died in a flood while working at the brewery, also in Trove.

It is also possible that Bridget married again to a Patrick CASEY in Adelaide in 1860. I dont see any children from them. He may have died in 1866 but who knows if you don't buy a certificate, but even that may not have the right information on it.
Genealogy is not an exact science, it is painstaking in the extreme sometimes :P You do need to get the facts, not the supposition, so buying certs is probably the only way to ensure you have the right person.

Neil, looks like more than one Bridget was about at that time. The one you mention was 24 when she married and her father's name is shown as Patrick Whelan (Adelaide Book/Page 41/200).
