Please is it possible for anyone to do a lookup for me on the Times Online Archive, it is of a Joseph Kennedy, am not sure of his date of death but he was head of the Murder Squad at Scotland Yard from 1959 to 1963, I am looking for an obituary.
Thanks
Anna
PS Have things changed with access to this since it's original launch because I'm sure access was easier back then?

Hi Kena
You don't say where you are in your profile but joining a library in many places in England and also in countries like Australia give you free online access to historical newspaper collections
e.g. one county online reference section which includes both The Times and The Guardian.
The other newspaper online source for local newspapers which are more likely to carry an obituary for a prominent local man than a national newspaper has a free index search.

Hi Anna
I had a quick look but there are too many results.
Check out your local library for your own access but as the name is frequently occurring, a date of death will help to narrow the results.
Do you have his date of birth?

Hi, am not sure of exact year of birth but when he was head of the Murder Squad from late 1950's to early 60's he looked to be in his 50's or 60's so I would say he was probably born in the 1890's or first decade of the 1900's.

I had a quick look but couldn't find anything obvious. The last definite reference to him was a very brief note dated 6 Jul 1963 stating he was retiring at the end of the month.

Hi, many thanks for that.

A web search on "metropolitan police archives" gives several possible websites. You can, in fact, ask a policeman (http://content.met.police.uk/Site/mpshistoryinformation).
