Title: Super fun name game
Post by: fenifur on Wednesday 22 February 12 17:52 GMT (UK)
Well, I think it's super fun, but don't hold me to it!  :P
Basically, after coming across some unusual, and often brilliant, names (such as swan Whiffin) I decided to deliberately seek them out by typing random words in the free BMD database. I've always loved different names (hence my resentment at being called Jennifer, the most popular name in england/America for the years surrounding my birth!) and often use them for characters in novels, or just as ideas for any future babies I may have  ;D
I know there is already a thread about people most uncommon name, but this is a little different as it's borne from deliberately searching, plus the other one is very long so it's always nice to section threads like this up so none are missed :)
So here are a few of my faves so far:

Flowers Flowers
Princesse Blanche Marie Amelie Caroline Louise Victoria Princess D'Orleans Orleans (Duc de Nemours)
Flowerday Peggs < I absolutely love this name!
Rocky Loveridge
Roman Jug
Pebbles Stanton.
Christmas Breeze

Brilliant :)
I just found:
Leaf Leavesley
Leaf Plant
and -  Leafey Daisy Carey. That last one I'm thinking 'named for where they were conceived' might possibly apply?  :P

I found one in census some years ago - Peachey Oke - which I thought was a lovely name for a girl, then realised he was a bloke!  ;D

Hehe these are great, poor old Peachy! - Happy and Sunny made me think of Honey - so:
Honey Cakebread
Honey Brown (Made me giggle as is the colour of my sisters hair dye :p)
Honey Coombe

Sweet Hart - if you're on ancestry do search for Sweet, HIS(!) signature is on a lovely freedom of the city contract thingy to let him take on apprentices I think.

Sweet sweetwater

I also found a sunshine Huggins, perhaps the same family? :p

Windy Charlish
Winderler Loose - surely a mistranscription? Winderleler?!
Forkinatus Webb - would so love to know how they came up with that one!
Rainbird Brothers
Rat Canterbery
Mice Partridge

I like that everyone goes on about celebritiesa and their weird baby names, when people have been thinking outside the box for hundreds of years. :)

This might be cheating, but...  ;)

The Guinness World Record for the longest name was a German, born in 1904:

Adolph Blaine Charles David Earl Frederick Gerald Hubert Irvin John Kenneth Lloyd Martin Nero Oliver Paul Quincy Randolph Sherman Thomas Uncas Victor William Xerxes Yancy Zeus Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenberdorft Sr.

...but he used the name "Mr Wolfe Plus 585 Sr."  ;D

Just thought I'd pop back to say that Golden Key is up on the blog :) http://bigharryunknown.wordpress.com/2012/02/29/golden-key-b-1837/
someone on ancestry has a photo of him, but it's 'private' :( I've sent a polite message asking if it may be used in the blog, so fingers crossed.

Also, this is terrible, and sorry if I offend anyone, but when researching the names, I looked up
Carrot Harsnip.
He'd died at the age of 5 - and my boyfriend asked, completely innocently - "What of? Consumption?"

 ::)

I felt so bad for laughing, but we def had a giggle!

In the township of Purchase, New York you will find a Quaker congregation known as Purchase Friends Meeting.

I have at least one relative from the 1700's who is buried at their Purchase Friends Meeting Cemetery.  Unfortunately for genealogists, the Quakers so valued modesty that the majority of the grave markers provide only the initials and date of interment for the deceased.  Not much help for the genealogist!

Oh dear.
This is bad.
Just spotted someone with the first name Fanny. I won't tell you what the surname appears to be (and indeed has been transcribed as) but you can find her in A******y in the 1891 census, in District 15 of St Mary Magdalene, Sussex, no 205 on the schedule. You have been warned...  ;)

A grave disservice to the lady - her surname was Court (1901 Census)

I would have said it was a bit of an anti-climax but the Moderators probably wouldn't allow it

Teehee!
Carrying on in that vein, I came across "Eagle Glasscock" yesterday. Replace glass with Wood and I think that's a name any man would be proud of! Although strangely he didn't use it much in the censuses...

Rudeness in the extreme

The "F word" family appear in many census records. Also several "C words"

Best I dont quote them here.

Mike - surname "Beard" but not too funny

There was once a firm of solicitors in Sligo, Ireland named ARGUE & PHIBBS
Article (http://www.sligotown.net/argueandphibbs.shtml) with a little history and reference a newspaper report that in the 1920's "Argue & Phibbs" were actively considering taking on a third member of staff, a solicitor from England by the name of CHEETAM!!

I couldn't believe that last one, Reufrozinia Cornelia  so had to check it - born 1897 in South Shields. Appears in 1901 as Afrozina C Oyster with parents Andrew and Cornelia. Andrew was a German subject and Cornelia was Dutch, so I suppose that is where it came from.

You may stumble upon it one day>

but

there is a chap called Curry Goat,  now before u ask he probably had a Nanny and a Billy in the family.

Now ol Curry did get into some grief cos he broke into a house and the window broke.

The next I heard of ol Curry is that he had a son,  who he promptly named Curry.

Well Curry junior he got into grief as one would with a name like that, cos the poor blighter got sent to India to do some fighting for the British Army.

Now before u ask  did Curry Goat actually try some curried goat or curried anything in India , well that is a question we may all ponder.

So if you go to family search, the census and the freebmduk u will see a lot of goats, and curry may come your way.....

funnily enough, I've been tracing a line in my family and found several generations with the surname Eggs. lots of interesting things have come to light about them including one who broke into a house near Southampton and stole some bacon, George Eggs stealing bacon? must have been breakfast time. Another "bad Eggs" (William) was quite violent by the sound of it but the two I found relating to easter perhaps, Minnie Eggs and a later generation Minnie E Eggs.  ;D ;D ;D

Thank you CB,
just to add a little story I found about John Eggs who I have been looking into.
I found an article written by a jp about Christchurch in the early 1800's where John was born and it made me laugh somewhat. about a shop keeper named Cusse who sent a man he employed named John Eggs to get some goods from the store with a candle to light his way. when he returned he was asked where the candle was, "stuck it into a cask of rape seed" he repied. Cusse left the buidling and ran a long way away in a hurry as he knew the barrel actually contained gunpowder. John Eggs just went and retrieved the candle, safely.
Phew!!! scambled eggs came to mind. a true story by the looks of it  ;D
