Hi there, thankyou for the information you sent the james pope aged three was my grandfather,he was born in 1888 in walker northumberland, its his father i am having trouble locating,he doesant seem to appear anywhere in the censuses, but i did see a listing for him as being a dock worker in ipswich,i dont really see where i can go with this,it seems odd that he ended up in northumberland when he was in ipswich, thankyou very much for your help though if you can shed any further light on his whereabouts i would be very grateful thankyou kind regards jane.

He is on 1911 census - and is still a shipyard lab
You have to purchase credits to view 1911 census - as we are not allowed to do look ups (copyright)

Here's one to consider Jane
1871C Heigham, Norwich, Norfolk - James Pope born 1865 (6) Norwich - father John Pope (wdr) 50, dealer, siblings George 18, Ellen 9.
In 1891 the Census info is conflicting so either Ipswich, Suffolk or Norwich, Norfolk could be likely. Ipswich seems to have been eliminated so....
James POPE birth reg Jun Qtr 1865 Norwich ref: 4b/169 (source: freeBMD)
This could be him in 1881:
James POPE 18 c1863 born Norage, Norfolk coal miner, boarding with the Kirkbright family Mount Pleasant, Thornton in Bradford, Yorks
RG11/4468/153/9

Thankyou very much that certainly is one to concider,do you know what the (wdr) in brackets means please, kind regards jane.
-
It means he was a widower
FreeBMD records this death:
Sophia POPE age 42 in the Jan-Mar Qtr 1870 Norwich ref: 4b/103
in 1861
John POPE 40, wife Sophia POPE 31, children William 13, Edward 11, George 8, Martha 7, Henry 5 & Betsy probably about 1. All living Pockthorpe, Norwich.
The interesting bit is that George 8 was born in Hartlepool, Durham & Martha 7 was born in Sunderland, Durham. The rest of the family all born Norfolk.
