Title: My Shady Family....
Post by: OchAyeTheNoo on Tuesday 21 February 12 08:33 GMT (UK)
Hi All,

My GG Grandfather Giovanni COSTADASI was last recorded as such in 1903 in Burntisland.  The next time I can find him and his family is 1906, and they pop up in Musselburgh but their name has become LEONARDI.

Before that I have found records of a brush or two with the law, and family stories say that he was a drunk and went bankrupt.  I have previously hired a Genealogist at some expense to try to find out if there is any record of anything happening that might have caused the family to change their name, but I don't think she actually left Edinburgh so I'm hoping someone out there could offer some suggestions for resources I might look at - either online or in Burntisland.

The National Library has some digitised Post Office Directories but I can't find any there for Fife.  I wondered about newspapers - where would the old papers from a little place like that be these days?

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks, OchAye :)

The British Newspaper Archive throws up a few references for Costadasi, mainly petty crime, around Perth 1894-1899 featured in the Dundee Courier and Evening Telegraph. Unfortunately the Courier has  been digitised only  up to 1900 and the Telegraph up to 1903. These Dundee papers often have Fife items as well a Perth and Angus.

Thanks so much Dod,

I would never have found those on my own, what a great archive.  Poor old Luigi, apparently he didn't tell anyone in the family those stories, how horrified he would be if he knew we could read about them now!

Thanks again, brilliant.
