Title: Oswald - mariners
Post by: SILVERCRAIG on Monday 20 February 12 17:47 GMT (UK)
Would anyone know if there were an Oswald family in the Dundee or surrounding districts that were mariners, either firemen or engineers
in the 1880's onwards . I have a birth in perth in 1889 with the fathers name being Arthur Oswald (fireman) whom I cannot trace. It was possible Arthur might not be his proper name.

Hi  :)

Can you give more details from the birth ?
Childs name , mother's name , if the parents were married it should give their marriage date(I take it
you are talking about a birth certificate)

Thanks to both ev & bleckie
The child's name is Mary Gardiner Oswald born 29 stormont st.perth to Arthur Oswald & Margaret King , marriage was june 1880 forest hall , london. However I can't find this marriage & surprising in the 1881 census Margaret King is single staying at Trottick ,Mains, Forfar working in the mills, in the same house the other boarder is her half sister Isabella King.
I have not been able to find Mary Oswald nor her mother Margaret Oswald in the 1891 census anywhere, they are in Cupar in 1901 & 1911 censuses. Margaret was born 1853 Dunblane to George King & Helen Gardiner.
Any help would be much appreciated.
regards

Margaret & Isabella are down as bleachers in 1881
My Morrisons(James & Rachel) were also in the Trottick area at this time and involved in the same trade
Sheets etc. would be washed then hung out in the fields to dry
One Betsey Morrison(age 13) fell into a vat of vitriol and died as a result

As for the death of Margaret Oswald at Cupar, I have that certificate, its the correct one all it says is Arthur was a ships engineer. As for the marriage at mains that is a felix arthur oswald to another woman.

I did the search for the Mary Oswald , but its not her, its a Mary Mcfarlane Oswald , unfortunately!
Is there anyway to check the irish 1891 census for her since her brother Charles Oswald in the 1901 census was stated as born Conway Island - or I wondered is it Conway, Ireland?
Thanks

As far as I know the 1901 and 1911 census of Ireland is available but anything before this was pulped due to a paper shortage in WW 1  :(

Found this -

Thanks ev, I had heard about them destroying the censuses before 1901 but wondered if there was another way to check births such as charles born in 1888 or if any districts kept any records ?
Thanks
