Title: Catherine McKenna/Finnigan b 1848 Ireland
Post by: Pughy on Monday 20 February 12 13:53 GMT (UK)
HI All
I have just received a Death Certificate for James Mckenna who died in 1883 Newcastle on Tyne
The informant on his Death Certificate is a Catherine Finnigan who I am thinking is his Daughter Catherine who appears on the 1851 Census age 2 & the 1861 age 13yrs.
On the Death Certificate Catherine gives her place of residence in 1883 as 8 Monk Street Newcastle.
I have searched for a Marriage for Catherine McKenna with a Finnigan without any luck also I cannot find her on any of the Census after 1861 either as McKenna or Finnigan
Catherine McKenna born abt 1848 Ireland
Any help would be very much appreciated.
           Regards
                     Pughy

HI KGarrad
Sorry but this is the wrong family James McKennas wife was Margaret & Catherine was 17yrs old on the 1861 Census which would make her abt 27yrs in 1871, but thank you for trying

Is she at RG9  3814 / 38 / 69

Your best bet is the baptism of John McKenna whose birth may not have been registered. You will also normally get two named baptismal sponsors who were often relations.

From what I recall, John was born in Ireland.

I thought that the death certificate may have given Catherine Finnegan as daughter.
Presumably, at the moment, you are not certain that it is her?

The family were in the 1851 census at Byker before John was born. John is dittoed born Ireland in one census but born Newcastle in every other census .

Thanks J T A - I should have realised with the dates given but didn't check  ::)

How would his baptism though help to trace Catherine?

Not trace Catherine, but Pughy is also looking for John's birth and his mother's maiden name though I realise it is not under this subject. The Catherine McKenna who died 1862 you found may also be in the church burial registers.

I have just had a look at the other thread and see that one certificate has been sent for already which was wrong.
Just for info there is a John McKen in the list for 1854 which could be a misheard version of McCann etc but on the other hand may be McKenna.  :-\
Pughy you could ask for a certificate specifying the parents. It used to be the case that if it couldn't be found the fee would be reduced.

Have you thought if Catherine is not deceased she could have been married twice,

March 1871 Catherine McKenna to Henry Collier,

Hi Radcliff
Yes it could be a Possibility but on trying to find the marriage you mention Henry Collier in which I was not successful I found 4 other possible Marriages for a Catherine McKenna with Registration District Newcastle upon Tyne in the yrs 1864, two in1871, &  1879,
I think the Marriage to ???? Finnigan to Catherine is the one to try to find but I am not having any luck.
Thank you for Trying
           Kind Regards

Perhaps you are too fixed on the notion that Catherine Finnigan was formerly Catherine McKenna. In 1881 there were two other Catherine Finnigans in Newcastle.

J.T.A.

Just noticed, I mistakenly said two other Catherine McKennas when of course I should have said two other Catherine Finnigans which I have altered.

HI All
Just had another thought on James Death Certificate Catherine Finnigan gives her address as
No8 MONK STREET NEWCASTLE I know it is a shot in the dark & 2 years later but is it possible to search the 1881 Census by Address the Address being one of the requirements on the 1881 census.
If it is possible how?

I suppose it is trying to eliminate the Catherine who dies perhaps?

If you could find any church records it may help- if they stayed in same neighbourhood etc.
