Title: South Tipperary Parishes
Post by: hamleyseeker on Monday 20 February 12 12:40 GMT (UK)
Is it still the case that parish records from S. Tipp. (namely those in the diocese of Cashel & Emly) are not available online e.g at rootsireland.ie and family search.org?

Yes The South Tipperary parishes in Cashel and Emly Diocese are only available on microfilm (to 1880 or so) in the National Library Dublin or by commissioned research from www.tfhr.org.

Indeed it makes life v difficult when looking for pre civil registry info, especially if some of your details are vague.

Re the TFHR centre - I paid for my ancestor's baptismal records and whilst was not really happy to pay the money initially, was happy with result.

I rang the centre first and found them to be most helpful. I already had ascertained a lot of details myself over the years - but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything (that could be found).
The lady on the telephone told me which type of research to order online, and it actually different to what I would have ordered myself & cheaper, if I hadn't telephoned first.

They found all my ancestors siblings, baptismal dates & sponsors etc...however they couldn't go back another generation/marriage/death...though I wasn't expecting this.

Thank you very much for this information - I found it very interesting. In which period were you successful and how much did you have to pay per record? However much it cost it's probably still cheaper than an airline ticket!?

In my case the baptisms were for Templemore/Clonmore Parish, and the baptism dates range from 1829-1841.

My information had the baptismal name/address/parish name/date/father name/mother name/sponsor 1 name/sponsor 2 name/register number. There is space for occupation/priest/comments - just depends whats on the register.

The search cost EUR33 last year, and from memory was called "further search', as I already knew most of my ancestors details..mother's maiden name..approx dob, parish, some siblings etc.

Cheaper than a plane from  Australia that's for sure :o. Perhaps ring them first and see if they can help you.... find out what's the cheapest option, and if they do have the records you require.

Good Luck

I'll certainly follow that up. Plane only from London Gatwick and a trip to Tip. would be no hardship but I don't particularly want to do Dublin as well!

If you know the parish, or a few likely parishes, then you can search the Historic RC parish films in the National Library without charge  ..

Thanks for that - yes I was aware that the films could be viewed at the National Library - just a question of when & if I can get there as well as Tip. We have good reasons to visit Tip. town but for Dublin it would be only for the the library. All things to consider.
