Title: Blackstone st and Arlington st.
Post by: Podenco on Sunday 19 February 12 15:29 GMT (UK)
Hallo

Does anybody know the area these two streets would have been under for electoral registration purposes.

Blackstone street liverpool 1922 - 1930

Arlington street liverpool 1929 - 1931

Hoping the addresses I have for these streets will prove fruitful in my maternal ancestor search

Thank you

Jill

Hi - I feel compelled to reply, even though I don't know the answer to your query.  I don't like seeing no replies!  Have you tried contacting Liverpool?  Here is a link:

Liverpool Record Office, William Brown Street, Liverpool L3 8EW Email: RecOffice.central.library@Liverpool.gov.uk

Also, I notice that Liverpool records office have a photo of Blackstone street in about 1930, not sure if you have to go there to see it, or if you can purchase a copy.

Good luck.

Thank you Polly88

I did contact LRO explaining I was hoping to look at electoral rolls for specific addresses but I am a novice! they sent lovely e-mail back saying its fine just turn up the staff will help you. I was just wondering if anyone knew area so I did not take up so much of their time, like  said I am a novice do not know how this things work but presume the more you know about what you are looking for the better it is. As it happens I was not able to make the trip afterall  ::) but still very much plan on going in near future and really really really hope it gives me some clues about my grandfather. One can but hope :)

They could be under North Scotland Ward.

When you do go you first look up the street in the index book which tells you which ward you need to look in. Then you look at the roll for that ward, scrolling through until you find the street you want. They are arranged in alphabetical order.

I had an idea it was really difficult to search the electrol rolls, but actually does not sound to bad even I should be able to give it a go ;D
when I get up there I will let you know how I get on.

Correction: Blackstone is on the Liverpool side of Boundary Street but Arlington was on the Kirkdale side. So you will be looking for two wards North Scotland/Vauxhall and Kirkdale.

Thank you both for replies

Any website info I get is very welcome, I know just from reading posts on here there are lots of helpful sites its just a case of finding them!!
I did not realise Blackstone and Arlington st were close together, I know Arlington st -where my mum was born- is no more I presume Blackstone st still exists I found it on a street map it is close to Fulton st another street that was on my list of look-ups, but because the date I wanted was 1911 and the place where those records are held is not open to public on Mondays the kind staff looked up my address. Sadly no joy the house was not on the register I was hoping the lady who was most likely living there at the time might of had my great-grandad living with her but if he was he did not register to vote darn it ;D

A huge number of people were not entitled to vote until post 1st World War. All men could vote in 1918 and women over 30 or those who held property.

The above may be the reason you cannot find the people you were looking for. Most working class men could not vote before 1918.
