Is It possible anyone can make out what is written on this card please
I think on the left I think it says and on the right.
Great - Grandfather -Scottish Bella's ???????
Who gave
Gran's - Gra?????? - Hayles ???? ????????
-
Great Grandfather Scottish
Gran's - Granma's ---------? *
Bella -------?
who came
from? Cork
* I'm not convinced the word is a surname, becasue of the preceding <'s> at the end of the preceding word?
Cheers

I also think this is one person (eg: a mother) 'talking' about her Scottish gt grandfather, and then describing that relationship to her (eg: child) as gran's granma's -----? *
eg: the scottish man is the mother's great-grandfather and the child's gt-Great grandfather.
Could Bella's (surname?) be 'Freer'?
Cheers

I think on the right it says "Bella's Friend who gave [?] the card".
-
Hi AMBLY. Hello Prue
thank you both for your help
If it is who I think it is AMBLY the surname * could be Hayles
and Bella's surname is Jude.
Looking at it Prue I'd say it is Bella's friend who gave ------ card.
-
Like Prue I read it as' Bella's friend.'
Regards Amber39
-
Thank you Amber39 I agree.
Thank you Prue.
Thank you AMBLY.
All I have to do now is figure out who they are :P
Paul.

Paul.
I know it well
;D ;D ;D
But they were about 1865-70 and it couldn't have a postcard backing then as they weren't around until about 1902. It must be a reprint so that gives us a clue.
Was the little girl Isabella?

I'm not sure who's who. I'll have to check some names and dates.
Paul.

I remember you telling me at some stage that they were living in Sunderland. You also told me what his occupation was but I can't remember. If the Scots great grandfather married a Miss Hayles, then we might be able to identify.
Think I remember more than you ;D
Will have a look later :)
-
I think this might be part of the equation:
Marriage - got an Isabella Charlotte A Jude with a George Augustus Hayles on same page
Mar q, Sunderland 1890 10a 873
Could she be part of the family?
gnu :)

You've probably got this
1901
37 Frank Sreet, Benwell, Newcastle :)
RG13/4777/6/4
George Hayles, 29, general labourer in Eng Wks, b. Newcastle
Isabella, wife, 30, b. Sunderland
Henry, s, 10, b. Monkwearmouth
George, s, 5, b. Ryhope
Edith, d, 1, b. Newcastle
and
1871
Jobling Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland
RG10/4999/105/7
Robert Jude, 27, Driller , b. Durham, Shields (South Shields)
Isabella, w, 28, b. Sunderland
John, s, 8, b. -do-
Robert R, s, 2, b. Monkwearmouth
Isabella, d, 2 weeks, b. Sunderland
Added~
The Scottish connection:
1881
19 Handhaugh Street, Westgate, Newcastle
RG11/5047/32/58
Geo Hayles, 39, bootmaker, b. Camberwell, Surrey
Elizbth, w, 38, b. Scotland
Henry, s, 14, painter, b. Newcastle
Geo, s, 10, b. -do-
Alf, s, 8, b. -do-
-
I think that this could well be the family in the photo. The ages of the two children seem to fit more closely to the photo:
1871
Oyster Shell Lane, Westgate, Newcastle
RG10/5070/90/45
George Hayles,30, Bootmaker, b. London
Elizabeth, w, 28 b. Scotland
Elizabeth, d, 6, b. Newcastle
Henry, s, 4, b. -do-
And this looks like their marriage:
March q, 1862, Newcastle upon Tyne, 10b, 197
George Hayles and Elizabeth Ritchie on the same page
Paul, I feel a great weight has lifted off my shoulders :)
gnu
(let me know if you need to follow up Elizabeth Ritchie)

Hello gnu :)
My grandmother Edith Hayles born, Newcastle 1900.
Parents; George Hayles. b, Newcastle 1871 - Married - Isabella Jude. b, Sunderland 1871.
George Hayles; Parents George Hayles. b, Camberwell - & - Elizabeth Ritchie. b, Scotland.
I'm really pleased with that so far the earliest photos I have of my family.
Thank you Bridget :) I really appreciate your help.
-
Well, glad we've got that one sorted ;D
Note though that the postcard version is not the original. It would have been a reprint from an original - maybe Bella's friend got it done for her :)
