Title: Old Colonial Records for Trincomalee Ceylon - help needed in locating
Post by: Radhima on Saturday 18 February 12 11:49 GMT (UK)
Have to locate a marriage for Cass Jeffery to Hannah (otherwise Ann Maria) nee Elliffe who (like Cass) had family who were apparently in the Army  back in the pre Napoleonic era and could have married in Trincomalee on their travel route through to India with Cass Jeffery's regiment 66th Hampshire foot.  Anyone know whether these records have been preserved please and where to access them.  Are they on the Internet perhaps or do you need to visit Kew - who have military history records to find them please?

Worth trying Familysearch always - you never know!

Just for clarification.

The 66th Foot were the Berkshire Regt

The 67th Foot were the 2nd Batt Hampshire Regt and went to India.

Hi,

Thank you for responding Scrimnet, GrahamSimons and also Salty.  I think they will be hard to locate as my cousin has now said they are likely to be held in Sri Lanka - but where????

Anyway, you are all pretty amazing on this stuff - really glad to know you all are so helpful.

Message to scrimnet GrahamSimons Salty and others interested in our prior posting for help with sourcing Old Colonial records.  Apparently these would be held in Sri Lanka  if indeed any exist at all.  The sites provided by rootschatters have drawn a blank, including the family search one.  Cass Jeffery was obviously in the Indian continent as one of his sons was born there when he was serving back in the early 1800's.  However, there must be somewhere holding military marriage records by Pastor or Army Chaplain or official person who performed the ceremony of marriage to the troops who went to India, either by officiating on board ship or on the land in British Army historical data. Who in the military might or maybe would have performed a ceremony in this era when  Cass and Hannah/Anna married probably in old Ceylon? Does anyone know something else which might be worth a look or try to obtain this information, please?  Too early on marriages for military for anything to be posted on the internet, presumably?  Any assistance would be a step further forward than where we are now.  Firmly stuck in the mud otherwise! :-\

Hi Radhima,
I'm also interested to learn more about Hannah and Cass Jeffery who were some of my great great great grand parents. Has any more come to light?
