Title: William Sadler died 1768
Post by: Gibby1968 on Friday 17 February 12 14:54 GMT (UK)
How do I go about finding information on an ancestor I know very little about?

My 7x great grandfather was William Sadler who died in 1768 in Swillington, Yorkshire.

That's it! >:(

PS I have traced each generation up to William and I have either been given the information by a relative I found during my research or traced it myself online.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

His children were;

Richard (1740-1824).  My 6x great grandfather.
Thomas (1743-1746)
Elizabeth (1747)
Sarah (1749)

No idea who he married and when ???

Looked on ancestry and I think I found his burial.

The record says a William Sadler was buried on 30 June 1768.

I think a lot of this family are buried at St Mary's, Swillington.

Re-visiting this thread as I'm trying to pull my loose ends together.

I still can't find any further information on William Sadler who died in 1768.

How am I supposed to find more information with so little to go on? ???

Have you looked in the parish records for Swillington?  I see that only marriages are accessible on Ancestry for the year of 1768, so not a lot of help there!!  West Yorkshire Archive Service hold the
records from around 1540.  I'm afraid it's a case of look at the parish records - alternatively you may be lucky and find a will, which might be of some assistance.

I have found some stuff online which confirmed the burial I have.

Unfortunately I was not able to find a marriage for him.

I have all his children's names and their christening dates but none of the information tells me who the mother is >:(

Hi Gibby1968,
I also trace my family tree back to William Sadler who died  in Swillington in 1768 and I was wondering if you have found anything further about him or been able to trace further back. I have some information indicating that his father was William (Jnr) Sadler who was married to Elizabeth Firby but gleaning more information has become a little difficult.

Hi

The last time I looked at this query there was no further information.

I only know about his children whose details I have posted previously but I would love to find out who he married and when he was born.

The information I have came from familysearch back when it was called IGI.

Good afternoon,
I have a little information which I am trying to clarify. I know that I found reference to Mary Geldard somewhere  on line but stupidly I only noted the name and not the source. (I saw somewhere that the William for whom we are still searching, married Mary Geldard but I have found it difficult to find any more information about her during the last couple of days.)
I only found this forum yesterday and was surprised to find your queries about the same person I was researching. I also found someone trying to find information about my grandmother. It's a small world really!
I will try to attach a couple of documents which might be of help, or at least they might point a further way forward.
I am just checking a few details before sending them to you but hope to be able to do this at some time this evening. I just want to check that I am correct in believing that whilst William who was buried in 1768 was not actually born in Swillington.
Best wishes.

All I can tell you is that my Sadler line apart from William Sadler (born c1828, my 3x great grandfather) came from Swillington.  My William came from Kippax.

I am assuming that William Sadler (1768) came from Swillington as he was buried there.

I will try and find some more information on this William.  There must be some somewhere ???

Good afternoon.
I have attached two sections of my family tree in jpg format.
They may help or on the other hand, ....... .
My tree has come to a slow-down with William Sadler, born 1663. I have added a text to one of the attachments which could point to your 3 x gt grandfather. Let me know if it points you in the direction you want.
Best wishes in your searching.

Hi

My Sadler line is as follows;

William Sadler (c1829-1909) 3x great grandfather.  Married twice; firstly to Frances Locke and then to Eliza Jane Henderson.  His mother was Sarah Sadler who was born c1805 and was a twin.

Sarah's parents were Abraham (1763-1840) and Jane Sadler (maiden name Scholay, 1765-1827).

Abraham's parents were Richard (1740-1827) and Hannah Sadler (maiden name Strother, 1840-).

Richard's father was Abraham Sadler who died in 1768.

So it looks like we do connect :)

William Sadler, the son of Sarah and George, is my 2nd cousin three times removed .
Richard Sadler, who was married to Hannah Strother, was my 4th Great Grandfather.

Interesting!

My line then goes back from Richard to three Williams. There is some confusion in this area because William (sr) had a son referred in documentation as William (jr). William (jr) had two sons called William, one of whom died in the same year he was born.

This an the area where our research work diverges because the information I found was that the father of Richard (born 1740) was William who was born in Bedale but who died in Swillington. Any light you might be able to shed on this would be most welcomed.

I think part of my reply to you was confusing.
You said that Richard's father was "Abraham Sadler" who died in 1768. I think you probably meant "was William Sadler who died in 1768". Am I correct?
I have the evidence from England Births & Christenings 1538 - 1975 which seems to indicate the following:
William Sadler born May 1663 had a son named William who was born in May 1688. He married Elizabeth Firby on 31 Oct 1711. Elizabeth's husband is then known as William jr in the documents pertaining to the births of their children (William (b 1712 and only lived a few days), William (b 1716), Mary (1730), John (1731), Thomas (1733 who only lived a few days) and Thomas (1738). William (b 1716) married Mary Geldard on 17th August 1740. They had four children: Richard(1740), Thomas (1743), Elizabeth (1746) and Sarah (1749). Richard married Hannah Strother on 23rd March 1763 and Abraham was one of their children. I have seen some information indicating that one of Richard and Hannah's children was Charles but I cannot find any documentation relating to this. Richard and Hannah had nine or 10 children depending on whether Charles was one of them.
I have all this in my family tree which is not on line. I have evidence of the various connections saved in a MS Word document but I cannot send it in this format on this site. I could try to convert to a jpeg format but would need to create about four different files. Let me know if you would like me to do this and I will send them in a few days time.
Best wishes.

Sorry for the confusion about Richard's (1740) father.

Of course I meant William (1768).

So far I have printed off the trees you sent and I think I have the correct information.

If you want to send me any more information I could pm my email address so you can contact me directly?
