Welcome reanna20, :)
we were all beginners at one time and there is a lot to learn, but you are on a great site, Rootchat, where people are so very kind and helpful.
You have some names to start with, so start by writing down everything that you know, or think you know, and start from something you know is reliable: eg. a marriage certificate ( John Brindley sr and Florence Charlotte? ) and work backwards in time.
Look on the free BMD for their marriage. http://freebmd.org.uk/
Read the Free BMD instructions on how to use their website.
After, for instance, you have the marriage details, then you work backwards to their birth certificates, getting where they were living when married, from that document, their ages when married, parents names, and the occupations.
The censuses are also wonderful sources of information. Search BMD certificates for clues. If you don't have many BMD certs yet, you can get them from the GRO.
My Brindleys came from Staffordshire, Audley, but the Brindleys originated in Cheshire.
In a few days I will try take a look around for you and see what I can find.
The best way to start your search on line is to read the thread for beginners.
Also explore this site.LDS
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Searc/frameset_search.asp
1881 census is available free to search.
Good luck! ;D

reanna 20, I forgot to tell you, that if you are referring to 'my' John Brindley, I don't think there is any connection to your branch of the family as mine never lived in Manchester. I got back to a John Brindley b 1792 in Audley, Staffs . I started knowing nothing, and eventually found many relations through the generations and had geat fun (and frustration ;D sometimes) doing it. He moved to London 1n 1815 joining the 'Life Guards' now called the Household Cavalry. :)

Hi
Is your enq directed at me or a general enquiry??
If general you may be best starting new thread asking for look up help. There are some fantastic people on here who will help
Good luck

about all i know from where 'my' brindley's lived is that my dad was BORN in leicester and my grandad was BORN in wakefield yorshire and that is mothers maiden name was HARVEY and then my dad said he thinks his grandad was called earnest BRINDLEY but he is not 100% sure and then like i said i could only find John earnest brindley or Earnest john brindley. i got confused at that point because sometimes people write their middle name first? lol this is very hard lol but thank you for your help ;D

In order to get a better response, I'm going to split this query off and put in in "Beginners" until we decide which county would be best. ;)
If you order your grandfather's birth certificate, as griz suggested it will confirm his parents' names: you can order online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ using the refernce number shown on FreeBMD.
If you are sure that Geoffrey's father was called Ernest, there is a possible marriage in Mansfield in 1931: Ernest N BRINDLEY married Hilda HARVEY, Jun Q 1931 (Mansfield 7b 309).
However, there are a couple of other Brindley-Harvey marriages around the same time! :(
Rambler

I think the marriage found by Manchester Rambler is almost certainly the right one - Ernest N. Brindley appears in the death index as bc.1904, died 1964 Leicester which is where your family went next. (Ernest N. was actually Ernest Norman Brindley birth reg'd Mar.qtr.1904 Derby).
However, earlier suggestions are correct - you need your grandfathers birth certificate to confirm you are on the right track.
