Title: James Hobden b1801 Keymer
Post by: Manjo on Wednesday 15 February 12 23:15 GMT (UK)
Hello
I would very grateful if someone can help me with James Hobden born 1801 in Keymer, Sussex. I found him in the 1841 and 1851 census but noting else. He had three children with Mary ?? and remarried in 1851 to Jane King. I would like to know if there is a marriage record for his first marriage and who his parents were
Many thanks.

Hi
The only marriage I can find of James Hobden to a Mary in the right time frame is James Hobden to Mary Starley 28 May 1821 in Ditchling which is next door to Keymer.
Am still hunting for his baptism!!!!!!

Hi and thanks.
James and Mary had two sons Alfred (b ? 1829) and Henry (my 3rd great grand father, b 1832, Keymer) and a daughter Sarah (b1835, Keymer). Henry was baptised in Keymer.
My dad seems to recall the name Starley from 'somewhere'.
Look forwards to hearing more.

Hi Suzi,
I wonder if you have any more information on Henry?
Kind regards,

The marriage in 1851 to Jane King will give James' father's name and witnesses might be other family members.  The marriage is on www.freebmd.org.uk so getting that certificate would help.  They married in the Brighton area somewhere.

Assuming that the Hobdens came from Keymer there is a marriage in 1786 for Edward Hobden of Keymer to Jane Brooker of Cuckfield.  Married in Cuckfield on 13 October.  May be worth putting on the back burner as they could be James' parents.    A long shot though.
I can find the family in 1841 but, apart from Sarah and Henry who are servants, not in 1851.  Can you give the reference?
Andrea

Thanks Andrea. I'm still looking his first wife who is only noted as 'Mary'. I'm going to go the the records office to see what's in the parish registers.

The Sussex marriage index has good coverage of all Sussex marriages and only has that one possible marriage to a Mary.  There are several deaths in Sussex for  Mary Hobden at the right time so it might be worth seeing if you can discover her age at death.  That might lead to a baptism for Mary Starley that fits in.  A possibility seems to be in Brighton in Oct quarter 1843 ref vol. 7   page 208 though there is another in Cuckfield in Jan 1851 vol 7 page 269 and Cuckfield covers the Keymer area.
The Keymer parish registers might hold clues.  Brighton will be more difficult as there are so many churches.

Hi Andrea,
I've also got another marriage between James Hobden and Mary Gent in June 1845 in Brighton. He had three children by his first wife who maybe Mary Starley, one of whom is my 3rd great grandfather - Henry born 1832 and baptised in Keymer. I've tried looking for a Mary Hobden who died before 1845 or 1851 as I presume his first wife died. The one you found in 1843 you found may fit?

The 1845 marriage will give his father as well.  A busy chap!   No doubt needing care for his children.   That means Mary Gent is the one born in Ditchling so the first Mary is still a mystery birthplace wise.
1843 death is looking good.  You could always ask the local office in Brighton for it and specify that you only want it if she is wife of James.  They are usually quite helpful about that sort of thing.
Are you a member of the Sussex Family History Group?  They have lots of online records if you are.

Hi Andrea,
Thanks for your help. I'll join the Sussex Family History Group.
The men did marry quickly after a woman's death for sure! I have found quite a few who married sisters.

Thanks for the help I have been given so far. It seems I have been following the wrong trail! I got the marriage certificate of Henry Hobden and Ellen Stapleton (May 16 1854, St Nicholas Parish, Brighton). Henry's father was not James as I thought but Jonathan Hobden. I've searched the census for 1841 and 1851 which show the right people at the right address but differing ages. He was married to Sarah and so far I have found two daughters, Christiana and Kate and a son Henry. Could any one find Jonathan's baptism (Southease) and marriage records  please?
Many thanks,
Mandy

In 1841 ages above 15 were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 so that might explain the difference.

Thanks Omega,
I found the marriage. I then lose the trail completely! I have a Henry Hobden born in Keymer in 1832 and had thought this was my HH, but the parents there are James and Mary. I can't find the 'new' Henry apart from the 1841 census and then again once he is married. I think two henry Hobden's have been confused if that makes sense?
Many thanks again,
Mandy

Hi Suzi,
That's fantastic, thanks so much.
I am having problems tracing them thereafter. Jonathan and Sarah were in Brighton and had children - Henry 1805 who I think may have died in 1806, Christiana in 1808 and Kate in 1833. In 1841, they have a 12 year old living with them who is called Henry Hobden and who is a tailor's apprentice. I think this is the Henry who married Ellen Stapleton in 1854.  I can't find his birth anywhere. Any ideas where to look?
Kind regards,
Mandy

Hi again Suzi,
I have found a burial for Henry Hobden, infant in Southease in 1877, can I safely assume this is my the Henry you also found?
Thanks.

Hi Mandy
Sorry I have been away........ do you have any idea where Christiana and kate are in 1841, i have found them both with Jonathan and Sarah in 1851 but seems strange they're not with their parents in 1841!!!!!!
There is a Henry Hobden in Brighton in 1851 as a servant but seems odd to leave an apprenticeship to go into service?????
Am still hunting for Henry born @ 1829 and Kate's baptism!!!!!

Hello Suzi,
Thanks for getting back to me. I have the marriage certificate of Henry Hobden and Ellen Stapleton, 16 May 1854. Henry's address is the same as his father, Jonathan - 3 Portland Street East Brighton. Henry's occupation is a 'flyman'. He was 22 when he got married.
I can't find Christiana or Kate at any other time either, nor a Henry who would have been born around 1832. I wondered if Jonathan had remarried hence the age gap  between kids but Sarah was still alive in 1851 so I don't think that's the case.
Very frustrating!

Ok everyone. I have received the marriage certificate for James Hobden and Jane King in 1851. It states that his father was Edward Hobden (labourer) and that James is a 49 years old widower. His occupation is carpenter and he is living at 8 Blackman Street, Brighton. Jane King (nee Willett) is a widow whose father was Samuel Willett.

The witnesses were Richart Chart, signed and Eliza Jenkins (her mark)
Jane King could not sign her marriage certificate either.

The interesting thing is that there were a lot of Willetts in Keymer. I have an Edward Hobden born 1761 (his wife Jane) and a John (17) living at the Keymer workhouse in the 1841 Census for Keymer.
There is also an Edward Hobden (45) living right next door to my Thomas Hobden at Parish House, Keymer. I think they were brothers. If James was also my Thomas's brother, but moved to Brighton, then maybe the elder Edward is their father.

I do see an Edward Hobden who married a Jane Brooker.

This in no way helps me connect him to my Thomas or confirms that he may be the James who was a witness to my Thomas's marriage in Bolney. This is very frustrating.

Did anyone find when Mary (Starley) Hobden died and how old she was?

Sandra
