We are looking for information on Myer Gladstone and his wife Emma.
We know the following
Warwickshire, England Census Transcript (1901)
Address: 2 Owen Street Parish: Birmingham Registration District: Birmingham
Surname Forename Age Relation Occupation Birth Place
Gladstone Myer 25 Head Tailor Coat Maker Foreign Subject, Russia Poland
Gladstone Emma 26 Wife Foreign Subject, United States Of America
Gladstone Rebecca 4 Daur Birmingham, England
Gladstone Annie 2 Daur Birmingham, England
Gladstone Solomon 6M Son Birmingham, England
We believe when Myer emigrated to America the immigration officer did not understanding his surname entered it as Gladstone.
His wife Emma was a Native American Indian and had 7 brothers.
Before moving to England Myer and Emma lived at Lived at 13 Hester Street, New York. We understand this street no longer exists as it was demolished as was others in a slum clearance.
At some time Emma's brothers also moved to England and fought in World War One.
Information we are seeking is as follows
Any record of Myer's entry to America
Myer and Emma's marriage record.
Emma's maiden name and any details of her parents and brothers.
Details of when any of the above moved to England.
We have no experience of researching American Family History but have tried for quite a while looking through Ellis Island and New York records with no results.
We hope someone can solve some or all of these puzzles.
Thank you in advance.
Very best regards
GorMau

Hi,
Have you considered this marriage - a Myer Gladstone and Emmie/Amy Cohen appear on the same page of marriages in Sept. Quarter 1896 Mile End Old Town, London Volume 1c page 876.
Added: The probate index shows his widow as Amy Emily Gladstone.

Hester Street still exists: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hester_Street_(Manhattan)
From what I've read, the stories about people's names getting accidentally changed at Ellis Island are a myth: http://genealogy.about.com/od/ellis_island/a/name_change.htm
The Ellis Island records begin in 1892, and I'm not sure from your post when you think Myer would have gone to the US. If it was prior to that, you would need to look at Castle Garden records. There are some links to online passenger lists here: http://www.germanroots.com/onlinelists.html

hiya again Mossiefish,
Gosh you get around. ;D
We are doing this for a close friend who has scant history on both sides of his family tree and does not have any resource to do any research.
Having said that I do not think he has considered a UK marriage. Her having a maiden name of Cohen would also from what we have been told would rule her out. That is unless she was born in America and was a Native American Indian. I have found an additional male child born [vol 6d page 96] and died [vol 6d page 58] in the March quarter of 1898 in Birmingham.
Hopefully we can get at the 1911 Warwickshire and Monmouthshire Census indexes soon both of which will help trace their next son better [Maurice Derwent Gladstone, who was born in 1909 andd we have his marriages yes MARRIAGES PLURAL to my friends mother]
Anyone thinking this is a big puzzle just wait until we start on my friend's mother's brother [Stanley Thomas born 25 oct 1911
14 Rochester Road, Newport Monmouth died 12 jan 1994 3232 Thunder drive, Ocean Side, San Dieego, California, CA92054]. ;D
Still many thanks again. We will look into that lead even to just 100% rule it out.
All the best.

Thank you shellyesq,
I have just found an apartment for sale in Hester Street. My friend went to New York some years ago in an attempt to trace his grandfather and could not find the street and he was told now wrongly that the whole of that Jewish area had been demolished as it turned into the worst slum area in New York. Thank you also for information on Castle Gardens. I was scratching my head where to look prior to Ellis Island.

Good Afternoon Mo,
I was up most of the night trying to trace this Emily [Emmie] , her brother Isaac, father Harris and mother Amelia [all cohen], when they were in America. Emily and Isaac were born there. Did not help when familysearch.org crashed about 4am. ;D
I tried in vain to find the parents marriage, children's birth and all of them on a passenger list from America to England. Similarly Myer Gladstone on a passenger list [USA to UK].
Not managed to get hold of my friend yet but left a message for him to telephone me. At this time I am heavily leaning towards this UK marriage.
As to this Cohen family they are on the UK 1881 Census at 2 Court 3 Skinner Lane, Birmingham. As the oldest child show born in England is Abraham
aged 6, this would indicate they left America before 1876.
So one step forward and a few backwards.
Very best wishes.

I too am doing research for a friend, and am very interested in the "Gladstone" side of this exact family. I may have identified up to six siblings (and possibly the parents) of Myer Gladstone. The six emigrated to the U.S. from England, between the years of about 1890 through about 1909; before England, they were from Kalisz, now Poland, but at times it was under Russian control. (German spelling is Kalisch) They were all occupied in the tailoring, coat making, embroidery, or other textile trades. "Gladstone" seems to be a translation of "Gluckstein" which was spelled with two dots over the U and has sometimes devolved into "Glickstein" in the U.S.
I'd like to compare notes on this interesting extended family. How can I be contacted directly?

Hi, I don't know if anyone is still reading this, but I am tracing my family history, Myer Gladstone was my great great grandfather, and they did live at that address in New York. I am the great granddaughter of Benjamin, who was born in 1904 after the census you have seen (But he is shown in the 1911 census), and the granddaughter of his son John. I'm really trying to trace my family history, We thought Emma's name was Naomi Cohen, but its down either as Emily, Emma or Amy. It is also thought our previous family name was along the lines of Glichenstein.

His wife Emma was a Native American Indian and had 7 brothers.
Emma Cohen, had 7 brothers and also 2 sisters
Isaac (born 1872 in America)
Emily/Emma/Emmie (born 1874 in America)
Abraham (born 1875 in Birmingham, Warwickshire)
Lewis (born 1876 in Birmingham, Warwickshire)
Solomon (born 1877 in Birmingham, Warwickshire)
Esther (born 1879 in Birmingham, Warwickshire)
Annie (Also known as Hannah) (born 1880 in Birmingham, Warwickshire)
Wolfe or Wolf (born 1881)
Isaiah (born 1883)
And Phineas (born 1885)
Hope this helps. With her being Native American my family have never mentioned this, We also think her parents are Amelia and Harris Cohen, who were said to own a delicatessen at Florence St, Birmingham, the 1891 census apparently shows this, but my nan has done this research based on information from my great aunt Doreen.
