I have again hit a brickwall, hoping that someone can help me.
Charles was one of the younger brothers of my gt gt grandmother, born in Deal Kent in 1845. After his mother died he went to
live with his eldest brother William in Great Grimsby. I have found him on 1851, 1861, 1871 census. 1871 he was a ship's carpenter.
Also found his marriage ( I think!) Q3 1873 to Mary Jane Spight Glanford Brigg R D ref 7c 1546.
Mary Jane is on 1881 Census, as a shipwright's wife living Glanford Brigg but no Charles.
I can't find any further census records for him or anything on Freebmd for his death. If he dropped the Maynard then it's making it difficult.
So..... any ideas please!

Not much help - but I wondered if you had seen the son (Willie age 8 in 1881) as a lodger along with some Spights in 1891
RG12 2626 19 3
No sign of his parents Mary or Charles MArsh
-
Hi, William in this census as a lodger, has Charles H Spight 78 amd Chas jnr 33.
Living with North family, could wife Alice North have been a Spight before marriage??

Thanks for that. Have found marriage of William to Ellen Baker Q1 1896 Glanford Brigg 7a 966. Also on IGI father given as Charles Maynard Marsh, but this might mean he wasn't still alive. Have seen marriage certificates where father is entered as deceased.
Have also found death of Mary Jane Marsh Q3 1883 Glanford Brigg 7a 371. IGi shows buried 28th July 1883 Glanford Brigg aged 33.
This would explain Willie aged 8 in 1881 described as nurse child with the Spights. I think it means equivalent perhaps to being in care of a childminder, but actually living with grandparents. Wherever Charles Maynard might be, perhaps paying for Willie's care.
In 1891 Census possibly Alice was a Spight, sister of Mary Jane?
It's a mystery! It's possible that Charles remarried.
Thanks.

Hi, just to add that Alice Spight married Frank North
Sept Qtr 1882 at Glanford Brigg Lincs.
1881 census Alice is listed as a servant 23 Cook
in Glanford Brigg

Several of my rellies were ship carpenter and shipwright.
Some spent their life on long distance trips - children only appear every few years !!
some were on local - coastal or inland waterways, and children appear more frequently!!
They rarely appear in censuses etc as they were afloat and were not recorded unless in harbour
Some overseas trips lasted many years

Thanks Tina, will look back on the Census, Alice must be Mary Jane's sister, and find the family.
I had been wondering beady about boat building/ship building yards. Afraid I don't know much about Lincolnshire. Charles M's brother William Woodruff Marsh was a tidewaiter with the Customs, lived in Great Grimsby.
As you say not recorded on Census if at sea.
I'm not going to give up though!
Through Rootschat found my mother in law's half brother a couple of years ago. She had not heard of what happened to him for 80 odd years. Unfortunately he had died 1991.

Thanks Beady for info, I know little or nothing about these occupations.
Love learning new things.

Charles Spight 33 with his Dad and the North's and William Marsh in 1891 is 23 in 1881 census, so yes the right family for sure.
We know Alice was in service.
Just need to find 1871.
Got them as SPITE, Market Lane Glanford Brigg
Charles 59, Mary 56, Alice 15 at home with parents, Charles jr 12 roper, Sophia 9yrs.
TinaM :)
Added: Yes they were sisters, Alice 5 & Mary Jane 9 in 1861 census with parents as SPITE again, another sibling Emma 23 and little Chas 2..
If you ever decide to trace all these siblings, your tree will be a mile wide ;D

Dear Gillian, as Tinam wrote, welcome.
I never thought I would ever get to know anymore about CMM, next to last one of my gt gt grandmother's siblings that I wanted to find. So a thank you and would love to know the details.
The family were split up, the oldest one taking responsibility for the younger ones who went from Deal, Kent to Great Grimsby with him.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi
A short synopsis - my gt gt grandfather William W.Marsh was Bros of CMM - his son Frederick William came to Monmouth via Brighton, when in Monmouth they had permanently living with them Julia M Finis (a niece?) - In some old photos I found a picture of a grave (my grandfather loved taking graves) On it is inscribed:-
IN LOVING MEMORY OF CHARLES MAYNARD MARSH WHO WAS DROWNED OFF NEWCASTLE N.S.W OCTOBER 1881 AGED 35YEARS ALSO
OF FREDERICK CHARLES MARSH AGED 1 YEAR AND 11 MONTHS
NOT LOST BUT GONE BEFORE
Frederick C Marsh death was registered in Dover 29 523
Hope this helps - sorry if I ramble. If I can help in any other way please ask.

I don't think I will ever stop being amazed at the help you get from people on Rootschat.
Thank you gillyflower2 for your post and the wonderful information.
Some questions! Do you know where the grave of CMM is? Also any ideas of the little boy Frederick C?
Julia Margaret Finnis was the daughter of Julia Margaret Marsh 1832-1893, sister of William Woodruff Marsh. Julia Margaret Marsh
married Ingram Bromley Finnis in 1851 Deal Kent, they moved to Sandwich Kent. Their two eldest children were John Belsey
Finnis 1852-1936 my gt grandfather and Julia Margaret 1854-1931, she died in Monmouth.
Julia Margaret was recorded on 1861 census in Sandwich but from then on was living with her uncle William W M.
I found her living in Dover in 1901 but it took me a while to trace her to Monmouth.
I was able to find her on Probate records, that she was living at Humber Cottage Monmouth when she died. Was that your gt
grandfather's house?
I have lots about the Marsh family, how far have you got with them?
Thanks again

There are references to the "Omba" in the Australian Newspaper Archives Trove.
It's free to use http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/28382943?searchTerm="Omba"&searchLimits=l-availability=y|||l-state=New+South+Wales
I have a vague connection to CMM as his son William Marsh was married to my Great Grandmothers sister Ellen Baker
