Does anyone know of any SHERWOOD (or variations) travellers in the parishes on the Sussex/Kent borders in the late 18th/early 19th centuries please?
I am particularly interested in John SHERWOOD (died Peasmarsh 1833) who appears to have had two wives: Hannah nee WRIGHT (ancestor of Granny Smith; marriage details + children already known) and then Sarah nee N/K. There is some suggestion that he came from a travelling family.
Thank you,
Melbell.

Hello Melbell,
the surname Sherwood appears in Robert Dawsons book on Romany genealogy as a recognised traveller surname.Other variations given are Sherrard,Sherred and Sterrard. In Hampshire,Surrey,London and Yorks between 1822 and 1911.
So you could be barking up the right tree!

There is a SHERWOOD one name study - see www.sherwoodfam.plus.com - for all SHERWOODs.
My non-Gypsy SHERWOOD ancestors (who pronounced the name Shearwood but it is written Sherwood) are found in the records with the surname spelt in very many different ways including SHERRUG, SHARWOOD and SHEARWOOD so keep an open mind about spelling as you look for your Sherwoods.

Thanks for the advice Darnity. I know about the site you mention and am in contact with this group, and with many other people researching Sherwood and variants. I have never considered Sherrug before - so many thanks for that.
The Sussex/Kent Sherwoods are quite elusive!
