Can anyone help me find the Ebbutt family in Croydon on the 1871 census. Thomas Ebbutt born about 1830/31 in Croydon married to Louisa, i think, date of birth unknown. There will be several children and details of those would be a great help. Thomas was an undertaker and in 1881 they lived on High Street.
Many thanks
Julie

Hi Julie.
I hope your still on Rootschat.
This is further to replies from May 05.
The 1871 census wasn't quite complete. The last entry shown was
Robert Stratis EBBUTT.
This should be Robert Streeter EBBUTT and is followed by,
Florence Mary EBBUTT,dau,8,Surrey Croydon
Ashley Simmons Ebbutt,son,6,Surrey Croydon
Robert STREETER,wifes father,77,retired butcher,Surrey Croydon.
As you can see Louisa STREETER was the daughter of Robert STREETER.
The following is from "Croydon in the Past" and refers to burials at Queens Road Cemetery,Croydon.
Robert Streeter d.April 23rd 1873 aged 79.
This was added, under the above,in the book which was published in 1883.
"Mr Streeter was formerly a butcher in Surrey Street(then called Butchers Row),
and carried on business in the shop now occupied by Mr.Dunham.His father also carried on an extensive business as a butcher for many years, and the family were well known and respected."
Below this reads,
Louisa,his daughter,and wife of Thos.Henry Ebbutt,died Nov.29th 1874 aged 41.
Maybe,in 1871,Loiusa had removed to Brighton due to illness?
This is from FreeBMD.
Marriage of Thomas Henry EBBUTT,June Qt,1853,St Saviour,Vol 1d,Page 20.On the same page is Louisa STREETER.
In 1901 Robert Streeter EBBUTT was a local undertaker, having followed in the steps of his father. His business and home was at Smitham Bottom,in Beddington Parish.
He appears on the 1918 Electoral Roll as residing at 26 St.Peter's Road,Croydon along with his wife Flora.
Although I have done some research on the Croydon STREETERs(on behalf of my wife),I regret this STREETER line is unconnected.
Regards,
Dave.

Just looking up my Ebbutt family connection and saw these postings.
Has anyone any info on Sidney Joseph Ebbutt. His father was Frederic Garmin? Ebbutt. Sidney Joseph (aged 26) married my Gt Aunt Florence Mabel Compton on 25 August 1902 in Streatham. His address is given as 176 High Road, Balham. I have a copy of their Marriage Certificate.
I understood that he was related to the Ebbutts of Croydon (Undertakers).
I can find no trace of him or his family in the 1901 Census, nor anywhere else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Freddy,
I have a Sidney Ebbutt born around 1877, father Frederick Garniss Ebbutt, mother Louisa (maiden name unknown). He was born in Mitcham , Surrey. Frederick Garniss Ebbutt was the son of John Ebbutt and Sarah Cooke. If you want any further details of this family then let me know. They aren't actually my family but a Harry Cleveland Ebbutt married my Great Great Aunt Doris Tyrrell and i found so much info on them and put them on my tree.
Best wishes

Thanks Julie - Yes that is the same Sidney Joseph Ebbutt. I couldn't seem to find anything on any of the genealogy sites. I sent away for the Marriage Certificate but was unable to read the name 'Garniss' but now you have confirmed the connection I will add your information to my Tree. My Compton family came from Mitcham so perhaps that was where they originally met ! Like you, they are not really a blood line of my family (only after my Great Aunt married this Ebbutt), but I am wondering if they had any children?
I remember my mother telling me that he was one of the Ebbutt family with the Undertakers connection. I remember a lady who was called 'Babs' who lived with my Great Aunt but I am not sure if she was a daughter. I don't actually remember ever seeing Sidney Joseph so assume he died fairly young.
Unless you have any further info on Sidney Ebbutt after his marriage I don't think I will pursue his family back any further. It is all getting too complicated !
Thanks again for your response.

Hi EBBUTT family.
My interest is Abi Susannah EBBUTT who became Abi PRATT when she married Matthew PRATT from Staffordshire in 1860.
I am interested in her early life. I am unable to find her in the 1841 or 1851 census returns. Sadly Abi died young in 1866.
Any information gladly accepted.
EDIT---
Looks like I found them in 1841 at a place called Duppa's Hill.
