My Grandad Lost 3 Brothers at sea in or just after WW1 . I also know there are more to trace and many of my ancestors worked the seas before war broke out. Is there a best way to research these losses.
Aboard HMS Arno we lost Jack and do have a local paper report on it I think its about 1916.
Next we lost his brother William John Green Born in Wivenhoe but lost on a steam trawler Queenborough 21st march 1917 ~ we do not know how he died , if he drowned or ship was lost or it was a disease etc. he had moved to Grimsby before war broke out and was living with a wife and two young daughters in New Clee.
Just after WW1 ended Aboard HMS Tintagel in 1919 we also lost his brother James Samuel Green petty officer with a service no . 239935 it shows he was one of two men drowned 26/jan/1919 he lived at Greenhythe in Kent with a wife and 1 young daughter.
Also these chaps Auntie Maria Green married a Christopher Joel Sadler in Grimsby having moved to Grimsby from Harwich before 1881. Unfortunately Christopher Sadler and their son Horace Sadler both died aboard Frigate Bird Mercantile Marine on 25 june 1917.Rumour has it there were more family aboard that same vessel.
What is the best way to find out more about the loss of life in each case?
Do i need to visit each hometown of the lost individual and search newspaper cuttings.
Do i need to visit NAtional Archives and if so how and what do i need to resolve this?
Is their a website or book on these loses?
Any help most welcome

Ady and hugatree my sincere thanks for those pointers to other sources of info. It gives further info and maybe another contact to discuss this further. Is there any point searching local papers? I guess grimsby is unfortunately full of such stories and may be difficult to find due to this . Some good news William does appear on the Wivenhoe memorial ww1. James is supposed to have died after war ceased so will look at the info further to try and work this out.
Any more views help like this are very welcome and exceptionally well received .
My grandfather was lucky he was born 1905. And obviously so am I he has 4 sons all survive so I will onpass this news and any further info to many family members. Thank you .Sid

Yes I would look at local papers of the time there may well be write ups
Mercantile Marine Medal Cards are searchable online but They may have been RNR so Kew and Yeovil Fleet Air arm museum may hold further records.
Commonwealth War Graves cover service deaths up to 1921 so if you are searching for other war deaths try there.
