I believe I'm related to the late MORIEN MORGAN who married well-known writer ELAINE MORGAN (nee Floyd). They both came from the Pontypridd area.
I think Morien, who was born about 1916, was a relative of my grandfather, LEWIS LLEWELLYN REES (1891-1970). The 1936 obituary notice for my grandfather's mother, MARY ANN REES (1864-1936), of Ferndale, mentions several Morgan relatives, including an uncle, JOHN MORGAN, of Ynysybwl, and cousins REES MORGAN, Machynlleth, and J.MORGAN, Ynysybwl.
Morien was a French teacher at Aberdare Grammar School and a Spanish Civil War veteran.
I'm trying to find a connection between these Morgans and Morien Morgan. Can anyone help please?

the most reliable way would be to get his birth cert to confirm parents
Morien W P Morgan sept qtr 1916 Pontypridd vol 11a pg 1023 mother's maiden name Parry
Several possible Morgan/Parry marriages regsitered Pontypridd

Hello :)
Have you traced your Great Grandmother's family?
Looks like she was Mary Ann Llewelyn born ca1863 Aberdare, and married Jenkin Rees in 1882 (Sep quarter)
Pontypridd 11a 535
In 1881 Mary Ann Llewelyn was an 18 year old servant in the household of Ann Edwards at 26 Maxwell St, Ferndale. The children of Ann Edwards were born in Aberdare also.
RG11 Piece 5304 Folio 66 Pg 33
In 1891, her son Jenkin was staying with his Uncle Lewis Llewelyn and Aunt Esther Llewelyn and their family in Sunnybank, Fforchaman, Aberdare.
RG12 Piece 4446 Folio 37 Page 28
Therefore Mary Ann seems to have her roots in Aberdare but moved to Ferndale.
Kind Regards
Morgan

Dear Morgan
Thanks for the info about the Morgans. Some of the names match those on the obituary notice. I've now got to work out how John Morgan fits into my tree.
However, my grt grandmother was called Mary Ann Edwards. She was born 1863 in Aberdare, but her parents were West Country immigrants. She married Jenkin Rees in 1883.
Very best wishes,
Alison

Hello :)
Do I have the right family (with Jenkin Rees)?
I can't see a marriage in 1883 for Mary Ann Edwards and Jenkin Rees :-\
Do you have the marriage certificate, or a birth certificate for one of the children, e.g your Grandfather? One of these would confirm her maiden name, and the marriage certificate should give her father's name and occupation.
It seems likely that her maiden name was Llewelyn, given that it is your Grandfather's middle name, and his brother Jenkin was staying with the Llewelyn family in 1891.
Also Jenkin Rees (her son) was born in the first quarter of 1883 so the marriage probably took place in 1882.
Best Wishes
Morgan

Found a marriage of John Edward Morgan and Margaret Ann Parry in 1903 (June quarter)
Pontypridd volume 11a page 954
You can find them easily in Ynysybwl on 1911 census, which is pay to view. They are likely to be the parents of Morien. :)

Perhaps your Edwards line was a generation further back?
There is a family in 1871 which may be your family:
28 Wind St, Aberdare
Lewis Llewellyn Head age 27 born Neath Collier
Mary Llewellyn Wife age 27 born Aberdare
Mary A Llewellyn Dau age 7 born Aberdare Scholar
Thomas Llewellyn Son age 4 born Aberdare
Mariam Edwards Visitor age 17 born Aberdare Domestic Servant
RG10 Piece 5409 Folio 37 Page 6
and a marriage of Lewis Llewellyn and Mary Edwards (on same page) in 1863
Merthyr volume 11a page 454

I think the Morgan connection is through the Edwards line:
Maryam Edwards with the Llewelyn family in 1871, is I believe the sister of Mary Llewelyn (nee Edwards). She also appears in 1871 with her parents:
26 Marwell St, Ystrad (Home)
Edward Edwards Head age 62 born Ystrad Collier
Ann Edwards Wife age 49 born Amlwch, Anglesey Collier's Wife
Merriam Edwards Dau age 17 born Aberdare Servant
Gwenllian Edwards Dau age 15 born Aberdare Servant
Edward Edwards Son age 13 born Aberdare
John Edwards Son age 11 born Aberdare
David Edwards Son age 5 born Aberdare
RG10 Piece 5386/40 Pg 13
This Ann Edwards is the same person that Mary Ann Llewelyn is staying with in 1881.
In 1861, Gwenllian and Miriam are with parents Edward and Ann, plus other children were at 12 Oak St, Fforchaman, Aberdare. Also Edward's 91 year old mother Mary Edwards.
RG9 Piece 4065/98 Pg 46
In 1851, as well as Gwenllian, there is a Mary Edwards age 7, Club? Houses, Forchaman, Aberdare,
HO107 Piece 2460/241 Pg 23
There's a marriage of Gwenllian Edwards and John Morgans in 1875
Pontypridd 11a 385
and a marriage of Mary Edwards and Lewis Llewellyn in 1863
so if this is the right connection, Gwenllian and Mary were sisters, and Mary Ann Llewelyn was a cousin of John Edward Morgan.
What do you think?

Thanks for all this info Morgan but if you are right it means a huge chunk of my research is completely wrong. I was told by my grandma (Lewis Rees's wife) that his mother was called Mary Ann Edwards and was from Aberdare and that his father's father was a blacksmith. This fits with the info I have gathered so far.
I feel really confused and need to go and sift through your findings and straighten things out.

Hello Alison :)
I'm sorry to throw a spanner in the works! Let me know how you get on with the information. The Edwards and Llewelyn families are obviously related.
Your Grandfather was Lewis Llewelyn Rees, born 1891 (December quarter)
GRO Pontypridd volume 11a page 573
I believe that his Mother was Mary Ann Llewelyn and his was father Jenkin Rees (as above). If you look for Jenkin Rees, born Llanddewi Brefi, in 1871, his father also Jenkin Rees is a blacksmith!
Location: Cwmtwrch, Alltygraig, Llanguicke Parish, Glamorgan
Jenkin Rees Head age 56 BLACKSMITH born Llngybi, Cardiganshire
Mary Rees Wife age 42 born Llanddewi, Cardiganshire
John Rees Son age 22 Collier born Llanddewi, Cardiganshire
David Rees Son age 15 Collier born Llanddewi, Cardiganshire
Evan Rees Son age 13 Collier born Llanddewi, Cardiganshire
Margaret Rees Dau age 11 born Llanddewi, Cardiganshire
JENKIN REES Son age 10 Scholar born Llanddewi, Cardiganshire
Herbert Rees Son age 8 Scholar born Llanddewi, Cardiganshire
Rodrick Rees Son age 7 Scholar born Llanguicke
Walter Rees Son age 8 months born Llanguicke
RG10 Piece 5435 Folio 53 Page 6
Of course, you my want to follow this up with purchase of your Grandfather's birth certificate, and the marriage certificate of Mary Ann and Jenkin. :)
Kindest Regards
Morgan

I will definitely be sending off for a birth certificate for my grandfather Lewis Llewellyn to check his mother's name.
I've got details of the Reeses back to the 1841 census and have collected background info on the places they lived in.
I'm pretty disheartened though about having spent a long time researching the Edwards all the way back to Somerset. I got back as far as 1596 in Wilts with one line.
Don't blame yourself though - I didn't force you to help!

Morien Morgan taught French at Pontypridd Boys Grammar School not Aberdare, although he and his family lived in Aberdare from about 1950 to the late 1960s. The family then moved to Mountain Ash, giving Morien a shorter journey to work.

Hi there, article in the 'Western Daily Press and Bristol Mirror', Wednesday February 8th 1939.
Heading - Exchanged Prisoners Back From Spain.
Article - Sixty three members of the International Brigade from Spain, who since March of last year had been in prison in San Pedro de Cardenas, arrived in London last night, having been exchanged for Italian prisoners. Morien Morgan, 21 year old Cardiff University student whose home is at Ynysybwl near Cardiff, gave a graphic story of hardship to a reporter. Incarcerated in a Monastery with no heating apparatus, the prisoners suffered from intense cold. Many prisoners were beaten up. Once a German escaped, and his colleagues, who refused to say which direction he went, were put in a dungeon and fed on water for five days."
