Title: Eileen Collins(Adopted) and Antohny Collins
Post by: LnCmusic on Saturday 11 February 12 02:24 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I'm 22years old and want to research in to my family. My mum has explained to me that my grand mother (Eileen Collins) was adopted so I am pretty stuck on finding out any details.

She lived on the 'Isle Of Sheppey, KENT' between 1930-1990. That is a rough estimate but definitely within that date.

Her husband 'Antohny Collins' also lived on 'Isle Of Sheppey, KENT' at the same time.

It would be brilliant to see if anyone could help.

Many thanks.

Adam

Hello  :)

Welcome to Rootschat!

Here is a useful resource on adoption:

I assume you know your Grandmother's adopted name and her date of birth?

Kindest Regards
Morgan

Havill is definitely a family name for us so this is 100% my gran mother. Thanks so much.

I will look in to getting the original birth certificate to find a different name at birth (if there was one)

Many thanks Morgan! I will read that Adoption page too.

Hi Adam

There is an entry in the birth index in 1934 for Eileen M Havill, is this your grandmother?

If it is, you can but a copy of the birth certificate from the General Register Office, this will show whether she was adopted or not as there will be a note made on the right hand side of the certificate.

If she was adopted, there should also be an entry for her in the GRO adopted childrens index, but you would need to know the surname she was adopted as to find any possible entries.

She married in 1960, but using the surname Havill. Was she adopted by someone within the family so her surname didn't change?

I believe this is Eileen's death:
Eileen Mary Collins  died age 57  in January quarter 1992 in Swale Kent (Possibly died 30th December 1991 from an administration record . (14 Galway Road Sheerness)
Born 11th August 1934

There are no Collins/Havill births showing for the correct area - the only one is in Southampton, and there is a corresponding Southampton marriage of a different Collins/Havill.

Was your mother born before the marriage?

Added:
Or was it she who was adopted?

Death of husband

Anthony David W Collins died age 55 in May quarter 1991, born 9th May 1936, in Swale, Kent

They both died too young.

Frank Havill born 1904 in Sheppey, (Mother's maiden name Road) shows in 1911 with parents Philip and Susan, both born Sheerness.  They have been married 28 years, 17 children of whom 14 still living.

Have you joined Ancestry or F M P, and do you want to do the work yourself or let us do it all (bit boring for you).

Whichever, you do need the buy birth and marriage certificates if the full parish registers are not online, to back-up the information from the censuses and educated guesses as to the correct ancestors.

Probable parents' marriage:
Marriages June quarter 1883
Phillip Havill     Sheppey    2a   1258
Susan Road     Sheppey

Ena C A Stone mmn  Keeble    Sheppey    2a   1870

Parents' Marriage?
 December quarter  1905
Gertrude May Keeble        Tendring    4a   1231
George Robert J Stone     Tendring    4a   1231

Hi Chempat,

That is absolutely amazing information thank you so much!

I am more than happy to purchase certificates etc.

I am happy enough for people 'in the know' to do the work for me but I'm also more than happy to get involved in doing whatever I need to do.

Once again thank you so much for this information. Made my day.

Is Anthony David W Collins your biological grandfather, and do your want to research his line?

This looks like his birth:
Births June quarter  1936
Anthony D W Collins   mother's maiden name Parsons    Thanet    2a   1918

He had an older brother who died, also called Anthony D W Collins, born June quarter 1932, died March quarter 1933.

Parents' marriage?
Marriages December quarter   1925
William H Collins    Parsons    Sheppey    2a   2484
Rose E M Parsons       Collins    Sheppey    2a   2484

Think William died and Rose then marries James Newbury in 1947 in Sheppey.

Her death
Rose Elizabeth M Newbury died age 72 in June quarter 1976 in Sheppey
Born 8th December 1903

Think you will need Anthony's birth certificate to check correct parents, and their marriage certificate for more information on William H Collins, as do not know birth or death for him to find parents.
