Hi
I am interested in learning more about the Bambrough family and would appreciate any leds or ideas of where I may look. The following is what I have so far (some of which still needs to be confirmed).
John Bambrough c1788 Whickham, Durham
married Dorothy Storey in 1817.
Their son was William Bambrough c1820 Jarrow, Tyne and Wear
married Elizabeth Beylass
They had at least 6 children that I know of. One of whom was
William Bambrough born 1851 In Tyne and Wear
He married Ann Swallow in 1873.
William and Ann had the following children.
Dorothy c1874
Margaret 1876-1896
Lawson 1879
Isabella 1882
Mary Jane 1885
James 1887-1918
William 1892.
James Bambrough born in 1887 and died 22 January 1918 in Durham was my great-grandfather of whom I know virtually nothing about. Most of what I do know has been passed down through distant relatives so the information is a bit sketchy!
I do know that he married Margaret Beatrice Newman in 1908 and that they had 2 sons William and James before James Senior died (rumored to have been from gangrene due to an injury to his leg) in 1918. I have no idea if he served during World War One though it is possible that he may of.
His widow Margaret remarried to a Robert Leckenby and had 2 more sons before she died in 1931.
Many of the family seem to have died young hence the lack of information that has been passed down. Any help/suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

I could not find James Bambrough on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site. Also remember that Jarrow is in County Durham at the time of his life. If someone was born in Jarrow, County Durham 1910 and died in the same house as he/she was born in 80 years later that person would die in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear.

Hello Fred21,
Wow James is also my great grandfather too!
I only knew our ancestors as far back as his father William, so your post has helped me, and so I'm not sure I can be of much help to you. There is a NZ site called pye net which has the Bambroughs & Wildermoths trees back as far as great great grandfather William.
I think my grandfather William Ernest Bambrough or great grandfather James was a coal miner (haven't got certificate out to check)? My father also said one of our close ancestors was a marine engineer [in the war?]
There is a story that we are descended from a "German or Prussian prince" (which story i have had confirmed from 2 other more distant relatives form newcastle and south africa who i met online) which from my research seems to rather mean Anglo-Saxon prince possibly Ealdred of Bamburgh.
I would love to have contact and know any more with any relatives like you if any one wants. Being still stuck in NZ there hasn't been any much Bambrough family contacts/info since my grandfather came to NZ from Durham so isn't much family here.
Any info I have I amgald to share but I don't have much and is only the last few generations.
Sean.

The closest baptism in Whickham of a John Bambrough I could find was 20 Aug 1786 s/o John and Isabel of Fellside.
There is also a sister Isabel baptised 16 Feb 1783 also born Fellside and a Margaret baptised 20 Feb 1785 born Fellside.
Children of John and Dorothy baptised Jarrow St. Paul:
Thomas baptised 2 Feb 1823
William baptised 21 Dec 1820
Elizabeth baptised 15 Oct 1818

Thank-you Janis :) .
(I assume that the 2nd john is son of 1st one from the date.)

I am thinking these children are to John Bamborough and Dorothy Storey. They married in 1817 in Heworth right? The son William (b. 1820) is the one that married Elizabeth Beylass.
I only found the 3 in Jarrow, none in Heworth. I can look other parishes that are close. I did look in Lamesley, Ryton, and Gateshead Fell because I know folks moved around to these locations and you will find baptisms in all those parishes where the child was born in the other the other might be to look in Newcastle. All Saints in particular. I have no idea why but there were quite a few baptisms there where the family was from the Jarrow/Heworth/Gateshead areas. It is quite the uphill trek from Quayside.
The sibling Isabella Bamborough (b 1783) I believe married one month later in Heworth to a William Gray. Also marrying 8 Feb 1817 with John and Dorothy was Matthew Bamborough to Isabella Cowell.

Hello I can inform you that William Bambrough son of Margaret Newman went to New Zealand as a young man and married having two sons and a daughter Betty-Ann who lives in Christchurch and has three sons. John Bambrough son of William was murdered on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand and the other son named Gordon may still live in New Zealand. William Bambrough remarried but had no more children he was the nephew of Robert Thompson Newman who also went to New Zealand in the 1920's. Hope this is helpful.
-
Thanks. Yes, he came to NZ though I don't/didn't know much about the details. What story i've heard is that apparently he had a work to pay for fare arrangment. When there was a strike he kept working because he was honoring agreement, and the unionists ran him & family out of town [apparently our family name is still disliked down there long after] which strain led to marriage breaking up, and both later remarried. There were only 2 surviving sons and 1 daughter but there were a few others who died in infancy, and another son (some question about father though) Patrick who lived but was killed in Australia (he was partner in the horse Hyperbola). John/James/"Janis" was murdered a few years ago now like you say. The other son's middle name is Gordon, not sure I'm allowed to say his first name because he is still alive/living (in NZ) though he is my father (so i'm a grandson of william's). William is buried in Paraparaumu, NZ.
I happy to share by PM what little i know about my grand/fathers more recent part of family if you want to know? (I drew a jpg family tree. My trees on myheritage and GenesReunited are only direct line as too much time/hastle to do all the side relatives) (I myself am more interested in more distant ancestry, though also in befriending any relatives.)

Hi,
I have John Bambrough born 1789 at Whickham on a family tree. He married Elizabeth Lonsdale in 1828 at Houghton-le-Spring and they had ten children.
Anyone know if this is a second marriage for the John Bambrough who married Dorothy Storey in 1817?
mim

Thank you for your reply, like yourself I too am interested in the early part of our family history. I can say I met William in the 1940s when he lived in Christchurch with his wife Ruby (never knew her former surname). Your great grandmother was the daughter of John Robert Newman who was the son of Robert Thompson Newman whose father was John Newman and it all goes back apparently at this time to 1797 when Robert Thompson was born. That is really on your great grandmater's side so it may not be of interest to you if you are following the blood line of the Bambroughs. I can tell you that William was a really nice man and yes they all came out on a 'scheme'. However, I was never aware of his name being vilified because of the strikes which were to do mainly with the mining section on the West Coast of the South Island. Patrick was a really nice person but an unhappy one. My sister lives in Auckland and will look through old papers and maybe come up with something else. Your great grandmother's sister 'Hettie' married a Kit Thirkell who lived in Horden in the 60's so maybe there maybe someone in that family who has more information on your family. Good to speak.

Apologies for interrupting the flow of this thread - It is not the same John Bambrough as I've found John & Dorothy in 1841.

Wow thanks friends ever so much for the wonderful information/details on Bambrough & also Newman/"Thompson" family/people.
I just need/want to ask about "Isabel of Fellside", does anyone have her surname? At first I made a mistake and thought it was Isabel Maugham because she was called of Fellside, but further research couldn't find any relationship of a John Bambrough and Isabel Maugham. The only what I have found is that it seems to be Isabel Archer who married a John Bambrough a few years before birth of John & Isabel of Fellside's son. Someones site on myheritage has a John Bambrough (1755) and Isabel Forster about the same time though, but only lists a daughter Isabela so I assume is not the same.
Seems I've reached as far back as I can get only on net/web and free sources. Just can't seem to find out ancestors prior to John & Isabel.
John Bam & Isabel [Archer?] (1781)
John Bam (1787) & Dorothy Storey
William Bam & Eliza Beylass
William Bam & Ann Swallow
James Bam & Margaret Newman
William E Bam & Ruby Wildermoth.

sorry to interupt but since i'm here checking after getting notice of reply to topic could i just ask does anyone know if the bambrough (&/or the forster) line(s) connect/s with the Northumbrian royal house/s? I done some work on the genealogies of that house but can't bridge the gap between 1000s and 1700s unless/until i'm able to do paid research thru mormons or other. You can see my dozen genealogical lines posted in my blog (site link in my forum profile page). (There were 3 or 4 mistakes where i didn't bracket brothers/sisters. I have to post corrected update, but depends as I was/still? having net/web problems.) Otherwise i'm stumped who the "german/prussian prince" could be?
also does anyone know anything about queen Bebba/Quenburh that could help? My father reckons that he saw book or web/net sources saying that she (Bebba, or Bearnoch? or Ebba? or Seaxburh?) had missing years and a 2nd marriage and a daughter named [Fela?], but I've searched and searched the web/net and can't find anything about such a daughter (unless he meant Ebba) etc.
also does anyone have any info about the "white bear" and the "house of the bear"?
ps sorry re my last post, i reread all the topic/thread posts/pages and saw that there had been given info about the daughter isabella which confimred that the isabel of fellside was indeed Forster not archer/maugham, and i confirmed that the birth/marriage dates were close match.

Hello again. I am trying to find how Matthew Wilson Bambrough (+ Ann Ellen Bambrough 1920-1995) connects back in with my ancestral line (since both our families have a same family tradition/tale). (Also interested in if/how Matthew Bambrough (+ Isabella Cowell) are related?) I probably could find out if i keep searching, but i only have dialup and it takes alot of time and effort searching out and looking up web pages, and i can only access free pages at present.
10 Thomas Bambrough (1670) + Ann Hood.
9 Thomas Bambrough (1704) + Margaret Nixon
8 Thomas Bambrough (1721-1800) + Margaret Jenning(s) (m ca 1755)
7 John Bambrough (b 1755) + Isabel Fo(r)ster of Fellside (1753?, 1778, d 1814)
6 John Bambrough (1787) + Dorothy Storey (1817-1841)

Ok this is as far back as i have been able to get so far. The tree in the last post is my tree. This is the 2nd tree i am trying to find where it links back in to mine:
{5 Matthew Bambourgh b1832 + Jane Gray/Bambrough b1833, m c 1860
4 William (John) Bambrough 1860-1940 (sister Margaret B)
+ Mary Ann ("Polly") (Cundy/-)Eastlake/Bambbrough b1854 Plymouth Devon, m1886
3 Wilson William Bambrough 1885-13 Dec 1955 (siblings Geo Bam 1879, Marg Ann Bam)
+ Jane Bambrough
2 Matthew (Wilson) Bambrough 1909-1981
(sisters Mary Ann Alice Fergusson nee Bambrough, Lilian Jane Firmager nee Bambrough)
(brother in Amble)
(1st wife Kitty/Caroline Kersink)
+ Ann Ellen Bambrough 1920-1995 (2nd wife)
1 (Z)SB + GB
0 SB}
It is strange similarity between Matthew c1831 (married (Mary) Jane Dixon) in my tree and Matthew c1832 (married Jane Gray) in this related tree, but doesn't seem they are the same.
Can anyone help with the father of this Matthew Bambourgh b1832 who married Jane Gray/Bambrough?
-
I'm quitting the Bambrough line quest as it is now too difficult and too time consuming etc and it is not worth it anyway just to find out who a very minor (& distant?) prince is. But here are my rough notes or lists if they are of any use/interest to anyone. http://iwillnotbeassimilated.blogspot.co.nz/p/bambrough.html
Sean.
p.s. any help with being able to shift to UK would be good.

I've found out that there is a contradiction in sources and am not sure which is right. I now have two different alleged lines of descent as follows:
11. Thomas Bambrough + Ann Hood b 1669
10. Thomas Bambrough 1703 + Margaret Nixon 1705
9. Thomas Bambrough 1721-1800 + Margaret Jennings 1725-1762
8. John Bambrough b 1754/1755 + Isabel Forster of Fellside 1753 (m 1755/1781?)
7. John Bambrough 1786/1787/1788/1789 + Dorothy Storey (m 1817)
6. William Bambrough 1820 + Elizabeth Beylass
5. William Bambrough 1851 + Ann Swallow (m 1873)
4. James Bambrough 1887-1918 + Margaret Beatrice Newman 1886-1928/1931 (m 1908)
3a. William Ernest (Laurence) Bambrough 1910-1984 + Ruby Constance Wildermoth 1911/1912-1979 (m 1934 NZ)
(3b. William Ernest Bambrough + Anne Patience Mcleman 1931-1984)
(2a. K... G... Bambrough (my father) + J... A... Wright)
2b. K... G... Bambrough (my father) + Jennifer Mary "Edwards" 1946-2020
1. S... W... Bambrough (me).
8. John Bambrough 1753-1833 + Elizabeth 1765
7. William Bambrough 1794-1876 + Margaret Thompson 1801-1863 (m 1819 Durham)
6. James Bambrough 1825-1888 + Dorothy Heslop 1830-1900 (m 1850 Durham)
5. William A Bambrough 1851-1916 + Ann Swallow 1850-1904 (m 1873 Durham)
4. James Bambrough 1888-1918 + Margaret Beatrice Newman 1886-1931 (m 1908)
3a. William Ernest (Laurence) Bambrough 1910-1984 + Ruby Constance Wildermoth 1911/12-1979 (m 1934 NZ)
(3b. William Ernest Bambrough + Anne Patience Mcleman 1931-1984)
(2a. K... G... Bambrough (my father) + J... A... Wright)
2b. K... G... Bambrough (my father) + Jennifer Mary "Edwards" 1946-2020
1. S... W... Bambrough (me).
Which just goes to show I have to be more careful with my sources etc. Unfortunately I am not able to go buying all the birth certificates etc which makes it less easy to have proof of parentage etc. The second one version is from Mormon site.
(In the first version I had difficulty finding out the surname of Isabel of Fellside. There were three records of Isabels of Fellisde marrying a John Bambrough in roughly the same year. Isabel Archer, Isabel Maugham, Isabel Forster.)
I still can't see/find any "Prussian prince" or "German prince" anywhere in my grandfather's ancestry, nor any marine engineer, as supposed in our family tradition. I think it must be wrong/fictitious. Except that Shauny Bambrough from Northumberland said they have the same prince tradition in their family too, which makes me think/feel there must be something to it. My father said his father told him we are descended from a "Prussian prince" or "German prince" via a marine engineer. I have thought maybe "German" was a mistake for Germanic/Teutonic Anglo-Saxon Bernician/Deiran Northumbrian Angle, but it doesn't seem likely. The genealogical sites only seem to go back to 1600s and not any earlier. Recently I wondered if my grandfather's middle name Ernest might point to the Saxon/Thuringian Ernestine Wettins but I can't find any link. About 10 years ago I met at a group meeting a lady here in NZ who once came from the UK, and when I mentioned the Prussian/German prince story she thought it might be the dwarf Polish Count Joseph Boruwlaski who was in Northumberland, but I can't see any link there.
I once found in google search a page in a genealogical site with photos etc with some woman who married a Bambrough which looked like it might be the German/Prussian link but I can't remember her name and can't find it searching again, and since google changed their search to worse than it was before I can't find it in my search history. I think she had some name like Isobel or Lutetia or something.

They had 3 children, all born in Washington, Durham.
John died in 1833 in Houghton le Spring, Durham and Elizabeth died in 1849(yet still to be confirmed)
As yet no birth or marriage date has been found for John.
All of the above information has been confirmed through certificates, church records and census records.

Thanks for the info Fred, and for the reply to PM.
Just for others/everyone I'm refreshing myself on Bambrough/Bamburgh history to help with our family tree research. I've complied these interesting facts about Bambrough/Bamborough/Bamburgh in Northumberland.
Bamburgh Castle. It was originally a Celtic/British fort called Din Guardi, and was possibly the capital of the Celtic/British kingdom of Bernicia/Gododdin ca 420-547. Some think the castle was the location of Lancelot's Joyous Garde of King Arthur stories. Passed between Britons and Angles 3 times ca 547-590. It was the seat of the former kings of Bernicia/Northumberland Ida Fflamddwyn "flamebearer"(547-559) & Hussa & Aethelfrith (ca 593-604) from ca 547/590. (Ida's wife/queen was Bearnoch.) Aethelfrith passed the castle to his wife Queen Bebba in ca 600/615 (from whom the castle takes its name Bebban-burh). (In Bede Bebba is just called "a former queen" without any mention of Aethelfrith. so she might not have been Aethelfrith's wife, she might have been Ida's, and some other earlier queen. I think I saw somewhere that her name is Celtic/British?) From 867 it may have been the de facto capital of an independent north-east Northumbria. Destroyed by Vikings in 993. Robert de Mowbray "Percy" ("pierce eye") owned the castle in 1095. The castle was owned by the English monarch between 1095 to ca 1191. The Forsters were owners/lords of the castle in later times (1191-...). Philip of Oldcoates controlled the castle in King John's reign. The castle was included in the property of friars seized on the behalf of Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The Forster's owned the castle from the mid 1500s to ca 1700. It was sold to Lord Crew Bishop of Durham in 1704 and he placed the castle in the hands of a board of trustees chaired by Thomas Sharp Archdeacon of Northumberland, and then by his son John Sharp. The castle was bought by industrialist William Armstrong in 1894, and the Armstrongs still own it.
Bamburgh village, Northumberland. A late medieval village that developed near the castle. St Aidan's Church, Bamburgh was a church built built by St Aidan outside the castle wall in 635. Bamburgh is known for its association with Grace Darling.
Bamburgh Lighthouse was built in 1910.
Bamburgh Parish has 2 chapelries and 22 townships.
Bamburgh Beast, a gold plaque discovered in archaeological excavations at Bamburgh Castle.
Bamburgh Sword, disovered in archaeological excavations in Bamburgh Castle. Might be Ida's sword maybe?
Bamburgh Dunes, a site of special scientific interest.
Bamburgh Coast and Hills is also a site of special scientific interest.
Bamburgh Clinic, an extension of St Nicholas Hospital, Newcastle.
HMS Bamborough Castle was the name of a Royal Navy corvette in 1944.
Bamburgh Research Project investigates the archaeology and history of the castle and area.
Famous Bambroughs include:
Renford Bambrough, a British philospher, 1926-1999.
Sean Bambrough, free lance journalist in South Africa.
John Bamborough, British scholar of English literature and founder of Linacre college (Oxford).
Waltheof I ealdorman of Bamburgh ca 1006.
Laura Bambrough "L'Wren Scott", American fashion designer, costume designer, model, 1964-2014.
I could add myself Sean Bambrough, an independent researcher of history and mysteries and some other subjects who has made a number of seeming possible discoveries including Atlantis capital city (Tiahuanaco), and Alexander the Great's tomb (Taposiris Magna).
My father said his father said we are descended from a "Prussian prince" or "German prince" via a marine engineer, and another Bambrough from Newcastle said his family have the same tradition. Though I haven't been able to find any such link, so it might be a myth/mistake.
Bamburgh Baronets 1607-1631.
Similar names:
Bamberg a town/city in in Bavaria (Germany), also an early ruling dynasty of Austria, and name of Jewish Catholic prince bishops of Bamberg.
Bemborough (as in Sir Robert Bemborough who was at the Combat of the Thirty in 1351. He relied on the Prophecy of Merlin. His surname may be from either Pembrooke or Brandebourch).
Banbury, a town in England.
Brandenberg, north-east Germany, once part of Prussia under the Hohenzollerns.
Unfortunately I don't live in UK or Northumberland so I can't go and do research at the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society there, and other similar places/organisations in the UK.
