Hello,
I am attempting to research Charles Edwin Oliver and whether or not he and his wife Nellie E. Magee had any children. The information that I have been able to find on Charles and Nellie shows that they were married in Kosciusko County, Indiana on March 24, 1906. Furthermore, I have found the couple in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 US Federal Census, but they do have any children in these census records. I'm curious whether or not they had children, but they did not survive. Nellie was only 25 when they were married, although Charles was about 44.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Tam,
Unfortunately Indiana does not have any birth records online to help you. The 1910 Census stated Nellie had had no children but the others don't indicate anything at all.

Thanks again, Sandra. Some of the information that the Warsaw Library provided indicates that the couple did have one son. Now I'm off in search of him and any of his descendants!

Hi Tam,
Don't suppose they gave a name ??? I did come across a Charles Edward Oliver born in 1917 but the Obituary named different parents, so back to the drawing board :(

Hello Sandra,
Thank you very much for your continued help! :-) I really appreciate it as I'm finding absolutely no information on the son. However, I was fortunate enough to get a name - Kenneth Oliver; but the library could not find any indication of when or where he was born, but it would seem that it wasn't in the Kosciusko area, unless he was born at home and the birth was never registered? I do not know if Charles and Nellie may have had children other than Kenneth.
Charles Edwin died in 1933 and it turns out that he committed suicide (that was quite unexpected!). In the two newspaper articles on Charles' death that the library provided Kenneth is mentioned as living in Chicago, so I presume he had reached adulthood and had to be, at least, 20ish years old. The fact that Nellie was about 20 years younger than Charles does rather widen the parameters for when Kenneth could have been born.
Of course, it is possible that Kenneth was not Charles' son by birth, perhaps Nellie had a child before she married Charles?
It is quite the mystery and I would love to find out more about Kenneth; I doubt I would be lucky enough to find him still alive, but perhaps his children and grandchildren are traceable.
Thanks Sandra!

If Nellie reported having no children, the child's surname was Oliver, he wasn't living with them during any of the census records, and Nellie was probably too old to have biological children between the 1930 Census and Charles' death, it seems more likely that the child was Charles' by a prior relationship. Perhaps we can find Charles on the 1900 Census or in a previous marriage.

Not sure if he's the right person, but this George Kenneth Oliver seems to have a father that matches your guy: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N348-ZSV

I found an obituary for George Kenneth Oliver, but unfortunately, no mention of parents or any siblings in it. It says he was married to a Cora Sewell, and his daughter's name fits the one in the 1920 Census & on the WWII Draft Registration Card.
I may be going off on a tangent, but there is a birth record for a William Russell Oliver in Iowa who seems to have similar parents to Kenneth. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XV6P-1FJ
A possible match for William Russell dying in Indiana:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VZ7P-XQ5
In the 1900 Census, there is a Kenneth Oliver & Russel Oliver living in an orphanage in Michigan:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M913-11D The birthplaces are a bit off, but the month & year of birth matches William Russell Oliver and the year matches George Kenneth Oliver above.

Very interesting Shelly & Sandara - and thank you so much!
So many questions and my lunch break is not near long enough to accommodate them all! ;-) I will post more this evening when I'm home and have access to my files. In the meantime, is it possible that Ollie/Olive Jeffries died and Charles wasn't able to cope with raising the two boys on his own and thus put them in an orphanage? Perhaps reconnecting with Kenneth later on?
I know Charles Edwin arrived in the US in the early 1890s, so he could have met Ollie/Olive soon after arrival and fathered the two boys before Ollie/Olive (presumably) passed away. I say presumably because the more I learn about Charles Ediwn, the less I am surprised by his less than stellar moral codes! He was my great-great-grandfather, but - get this! - I'm decsended from his children from his first marriage in England!! His first wife, Maria, my great-great grandmother was still alive in England until at least 1911, but I can find no record of a divorce - whoops! It seems Charles just ran away from his life and family there, I wish I knew the circumstances of the separation.
These are all fascinating leads I am going to have to dig into.
Thank you for all your help! I'm always amazed by the capacity of RootsChat members to help! :-)

Looks as if George married Cora May Olson/Sewell in November 1942 Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois. Which would fit between the death of Ellen 11 April 1942 and George 2 Dec 1942.
Cora May Sewell - Marriage Date: 12 Nov 1942

It looks like Nellie shows up on an estate index here: http://www.ingenweb.org/inkosciusko/estateO.htm Further information is available for a fee.
I noticed that there is a person who does look-ups for marriage application records: http://www.ingenweb.org/inkosciusko/lookups.htm I don't know if the marriage application gives any information that you don't already have, but I thought it may say if Charles was reporting any previous marriages.
I noticed that Charles, Nellie, and some of Nellie's family were in Detroit, Michigan in the 1910 Census. Maybe that had something to do with Kenneth being there? I can't find Kenneth then, but thought it was a possibility.

I think this might be Kenneth with mother Olie A. Duffey in the 1910 Census: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MK5K-RN7 It says that Olie is on marriage #2 (as was her husband), they had been married for 11 years, and she was the mother of 4 children, 3 of whom were living. That seems to fit with her losing the other son William Russell. On the image, no surname is listed for the 2 younger children, so I assume they are the children of H.M. Duffey. It says Kenneth's father was born in England & mother born in Indiana.
Olie/Olive is in Mishawaka in 1930 - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X4BJ-V3G That was where Kenneth had lived previously per the obituary index & his WWI draft registration card.
Ollie appears to be on the obituary index here: http://www2.sjcpl.org/obits/page_detail.php?recid=84792

This appears to be one of Olive & Harry's sons: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSvcid=199814&GRid=53329071& I wonder if an obituary or other record might shed some light on Olive's maiden name or his siblings to help us figure out if this all ties together.
