Title: Where was he? Ist Royal Berkshire 1901-1902
Post by: dillonking on Thursday 09 February 12 10:07 GMT (UK)
My great uncle’s service record with the First Royal Berkshire is as follows. Does anybody know which places he might have been in the parts of the record that are illegible? I have looked everywhere on google to try and find the history of the movements of the regiment but to no avail.
Service :
Illegible 23.5.1901 – 29.10.1901
Illegible 31.10.1901 - 3.05.1902
Home 11.05.1902 – 11.12.1903
Egypt 12.121903 – 2.12.1906
India 3.12.1906 – 3.12.1908

Almost certainly Home followed by South Africa. I am away from my files at present, but if he enlisted 23.5.1901 then he would have started off in the Depot.

You can check his first posting as any award for medals for the Boer War should be noted on the papers you have.

The first entry is "Home", with the Depot Battalion.
Second line is "Gibraltar" with 1st Bn.
He then returned to the Depot for a while. The service in Egypt and India was with 2nd Bn, according to the postings on his Statement of Services (the preceding image on Ancestry).

Thank you so much for that! How on earth did you make it out! I enlarged it and tried to read it but just couldn't make it out at all.

If you are good at reading illegible writing could you possibly look at the page where his children are noted as two of them were crossed out so I presume they died but there is a word written above one of them and it looks like burial to me. Would you be so kind as to look at that for me!

I can't thank you enough by the way it is great to know for certain. On his medal card the exact battalion wasn't written.

I didn't give you his name! Victor Thomas Howe Bradley! No 6125

I got his name from your other question in the WW1 section!

As far as I can make out, the deleted names are Anna Maria, born 21/11/11, baptised 28/11/11, and Edward Paul, born 29/6/13, baptised 3/7/13.
There are corresponding birth records in the Irish BMDs on Ancestry (this is Bray, Co.Wicklow, not Bray, Berkshire, which had me confused for a while!! :)) for Anna Mary in Q4 1911 and Edward Paul in Q3 1913, both in Rathdown district.

And it does look as if it says "Died 9/12/14", but I can't find any death registrations.

Thanks Adrian! You are very ressourceful I must say! I will add those birth registrations to my tree and it is strange about no death entry. I think the family left Ireland in 1912 when Victor Thomas reenlisted so I might be able to find the deaths in the British BMD.

It was very kind of you to help me out

Dear Dillon King

Try the Regimental Museum Website at www.thewardrobe.org.uk This museum in Salisbury hold the records of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. They have an enquiry section on the website that will be worth trying. On the site also is the timeline which comes from the digest of service. It does not name names but gives battalion movements. Also try THE COLLECTION on the site which holds nearly 30.000 images many from the time you are looking at. Like a lot of Regimental Museums holding records for individual soldiers is a bit hit and miss, but still worth a try. [Its called THE WARDROBE because that is the name of the building that the collection is housed in next to Salisbury Cathedral]

Good Hunting
Cheers
